Top 100 Music Albums of the 2020s by buzzdainer
Because the 2020s are such a young decade, and because I'm early in the process of digesting anything from 2021, this chart is really just a regurgitation of my 2020 chart at this point. I'll open it up to feedback once this feels less like a placeholder chart and more like a meaningful commentary on the 2020s in music.

I've loved Chris Stapleton since his days as frontman for the excellent bluegrass band the SteelDrivers, but I consider this album to be his true breakout, and his masterpiece. Sometimes an artist's greatest clarity of vision happens to coincide with the cultural and historical context in which it is situated, giving it a sense of poignancy that feels even sharper than the sum of its parts. That's the case with the title track of this album, a deceptively easygoing ballad that unravels the stakes, the gains, and the pleasures of committing to integrity over chasing what you’re told you want. "Starting Over" feels like the only sensible approach to the pain and the setbacks inflicted upon all of us by the tragic events of 2020, and it's such a comfort to have Chris Stapleton's soulful country rock, with its homeage to the elements that made seventies acts such as the Allman Brothers and Willie Nelson so great. An album that achieves the worthiest goal of feeling both urgently needed and built to be sturdy and timeless.

This is the sixth album by dual banjoists Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee, who take their name from a John Hartford poem, a fitting tribute to their Americana roots. I haven't heard any of their other albums, though I'm making that a priority given the strength of The Perfect Plan. It's hard to say at this point whether or not this album will have lasting staying power for me, but as an encapsulation of the feelings the year 2020 brought up for me, it's hard to imagine coming up with anything more perfect than this. That's not to say The Lowest Pair are a technically perfect band, but what it does mean is that they've artfully captured the longings and regrets of a year spent deep in isolation.

Bonny Light Horseman is an indie folk supergroup, consisting of Vermont singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, Fruit Bats frontman Eric Johnson, and Josh Ritter's touring guitarist Josh Kaufman. Such projects are often underwhelming, but this one is pretty inspired, and resulted in a Grammy nomination for best folk album. For me the highlight here is "The Roving," a heart-rending tale of lost love that feels both wholly contemporary and deeply rooted in Irish folk tradition.
