Top 35 Greatest Music Albums
by oilnoilnoilnoil
This chart is about how I've encountered some of my favorite albums in life. Maybe it's not a true favorite album unless I've had a real experience with it??
Most of the music on here isn't in my current listening rotation, but whatever. I've had good times with these albums, and I know I'll be back at some point.

My dear friend and I found ourselves doing dishes on a farm in France owned by a crazy vegan lady. Actually she was kinda nice, but still kinda crazy. Dishes generally aren't that much fun, but they are so relaxing especially with a great person and some tunes. The moment seemed right, and we listened to a few songs from Pink Moon. Yay! Another perfect moment etched into my brain.
This is another album that's pretty sacred. I simply can't add it to playlists; every play must be totally intentional.

Sitting in an abandoned building at night in the Namibian desert, my friend and I were naturally listening to Lingua Ignota and Diamanda Galas. Naturally. As one does. Naturally. I had convinced her somehow that this would be a good idea, and she bore each artist for a bit before her ears began to bleed. But at the breaking point I put on a couple songs from this album. It's hard to grasp how huge the contrast is, but also in contrast there is meaning and beauty. Anywho, we enjoyed those songs like no one ever has.
I don't show Diana Krall to all that many people, and certainly not this album. It has a certain sacredness to me, meant only for real romantic partners. Occasionally a really close friend gets to hear it, but rarely. I have had some of the most tender moments with this album.

The moon was holding out on us. My group of friends was camping on a hill in the desert surrounded by beautiful red rocks and blue mountains in the distance, all of which had disappeared into the night. A few stars were out, but we didn't care. We wanted the moon. We'd seen it's elegant figure rise the previous night in a magnificent red hue and it seemed overdue. Where was it? Maybe it forgot to rise? Sitting around the campfire we'd mostly given up hope, but then our friend on DJ played Tres Hermanos.
As if on cue, a stark blood-red moon rose. Truly, this is music for the desert. Never misses.

I met this lovely Burman girl while in Estonia. Our first date (we met on a dating app) was to go to a Swans concert. I warned her she might not like it, but she still wanted to go. And wow what an experience! And we stayed for the whole thing. After leaving I asked her what other concerts she's been to. None! This was her first! What a great thing to get to introduce someone to live music with a freaking Swans concert. And she even liked it. Hell yeah.

We were a group of 7 or 8 restoring a sawmill in the Italian countryside eating good food and drinking good wine every day. I was making risotto and my girl was helping. She was browsing my phone for some music to play and landed on this. What a fun album! We sang and danced along like idiots. I couldn't possibly match her dance moves, and I don't think she could match my cooking. haha.

My friend and I were bumbling around the Alaskan bush one day collecting soil samples and trying to avoid the bears. We'd listened to so much music, and I thought, just maybe, he'd vibe with this album. We didn't get all that far really, but it planted a seed. A few days later he revisited Veteran and within a couple weeks he was totally hooked. I love introducing people to challenging music; often they don't "get it," but when they do it's amazing. One of my proudest music achievements.

I got an invite to join some friends to see Saintseneca in a small concert venue in Denver. I didn't really consider going all that much, but on a whim I bought a ticket. My friend really loved the band, and I figured I'd see what was up. I gave the album a few listens the week before the concert and liked the songs fairly well. Concert day arrives and we go with good chats along the way. First band is decent, second band is kinda "eh", and then Saintseneca comes out. Incredible performance! To this day easily one of the best I've ever heard. I'd been to lots of classical concerts at this point, but not so many rock/folk/etc concerts, and this concert really made me fall in love with live music in a different way than I'd experienced it before.

I'd had this on my list for a while but hadn't realized how important this album was, but enter my first field season in Alaska. We worked long days every day and finally my friend and coworker turned on a few songs from this album. I realized I loved it immediately, and I've returned to this album ever since. This came along at a good time to, because my music taste was too heavily influenced by some of the weird music that only makes its rounds on insular music forums. I now realize how much my music couldn't hang.

"Oh that's not a good noise", I thought as I turned around just in time to see a cook puking in the trashcan. But this was no ordinary cook, it was the legendary Mr W. The double shots of whiskey evidently hadn't sat very well on top of how ever many Rainier beers he'd drained. But not to be intimidated by too much alcohol, he sprang right back up, (hopefully washed his hands), and started plating appetizers.
Kitchen life is a monster. This one hits me right in the feels. It's a summation of some of the greatest highs and lows I've experienced yet. Not that this music has much to do with cooking beyond my own association. Even the first few seconds take me back to nights getting slammed for bruscetta, pizza dough, and grapefruit sorbet. It takes me back to the alcoholics and drug addicts that I got so unbelievably attached to. The withdrawing coworker that still somehow had my back and still managed to tell the most vile jokes. Back to the chaotic spirals of kitchen politics. So what is this music to me? It's the scratched aluminum counter tops, the grime in the grout on that orange tile floor, the taste of anchovies and fontina, the defeated shell-of-man feeling, the this-is-everything hug from someone as sweaty as myself.
W, this one's for you. [First added to this chart: 11/12/2024]

Sitting around a campfire in the desert late at night, my friends requested this incredible artist. They'd seen him a mere 2 weeks previously. We listened to 1 song and then 3 and before we knew it we'd listened to his entire discography right there. The sand, the twisted juniper trees, the essence of sage brush and campfire smoke, the moonlight dimly lighting cliffs and ravines in the parched landscape. That's what this album is for me.
