Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 3% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 79.8/100, a mean average of 79.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.4/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 18.1.

Sorry to be an intellectual snob, but INSIGHTFUL critics don't use Oasis and Radiohead in the same sentence. Get a clue..

Yeah, In Shreds is great but the overall sound is too melancholic and Echo & The Bunnymen-ish for me. Overlooked? Yes, but also a bit dated.
What an amazing band, if you enjoy post-punk you should really add them to your listening list. Two tracks I see missing here in the top tracks listing are In Shreds and Nostalgia. In Shreds is Mark's favorite record. Also, Paradiso is absent from top tracks for some reason?

They were the greatest band ever. Why they were never as successful as The Smiths and Stone Roses totally escapes me. So many bands around today were influenced by The Chameleons - Interpol, Editors, The Horrors, etc.
The Chameleons sit right alongside Kitchens of Distinction and The Call as amazing great bands of the 1980's that somehow got totally overlooked by almost everyone. Luckily a few discerning fans and critics took notice. Hopefully more people can find out about them after the fact.
Like a mixture of the Cure & Joy Division...Maybe with a little bit more in there too. Great band, highly underrated.
so strange that such a good band is so much unknown, they deserve as much recognition as Joy Division at least.
I'm going to have to listen to them then.
The most inciteful critics have long considered The Chameleons one of the greatest bands. Sorry to be an intellectual snob, but most people doing these "rankings" often employ slapdash and ill-conceived criteria, and have little capacity to understand the timeless brilliance of Script of the Bridge, Strange Times, and What Does Anything Mean, Basically. The Chameleons have influenced the likes of Oasis, Radiohead, Interpol, and are praised by New Order, The Smiths, The Fall and other Manchesterians. Get a clue..
