Waxahatchee
by Foxforce5

I have come to believe Katie Crutchfield is a genius. I have to ration her music because every day I reach for it like a loved one.

What to say about this masterpiece? It’s probably my favourite album for 10 years or so, but why.

The first thing is the voice. Crutchfield has a brilliant voice full of expression speaking directly to my soul. Never given to showy 10 notes where one will do. Her latest two offerings as Waxahatchee are country down home songs. Previously there was a more indie flavour. She has definitely found her voice now. What once was good is now great. Nowhere is this more evident in the song St Cloud itself, her most powerful vocal by some measure.

The second string to the excellence is her songwriting. It can be really difficult to gather her exact meaning at (almost all) times, but this gives the songs legs as you try to discern understanding and a deliberate breadth of meaning.

Tigers blood is a brilliant offering. Its high points (365, Right Back To It) are right up there with St. Cloud. After a whole load of listens, it falls just short of the consistency of the former. When she says on Lone Star Lake ‘my failure’s legendary’ she might have been referring to Tiger’s brilliance.

Still one of the best albums of the decade.

Ivy Tripp is for me the most interesting release outside the 2 greats. Much more indie in flavour, it kicks off well enough, but it is the second half that gets really interesting.

Starting with <, perhaps Katie’s best outside St Tiger it builds into dischordant brilliance. Summer of love is effortlessly great and half moon is quietly brilliant. The closer and opener are similar in feel.

Great lo-fi effort leaves nowhere to hide. But don’t worry, she’s as talented as hell. [First added to this chart: 12/18/2025]

The great voice is an ever present. Somehow Cerulean Salt doesn’t grip me. It is pleasant enough but ten or so listens in it struggles to leave any lasting impression.

There are albums in my list of favourites that took more time - Tigers Blood was one - so we shall see.
