Bjork’s restless genius
by Foxforce5

Some of my favourite people don’t like Bjork. And that’s fine. I get it. That restless exploration is going to alienate as many people as it beguiles.

A few thoughts on her solo career..

First off, the choice of erstwhile Massive Attack compadre Nellee Hooper was a brilliant move. Bjork hits the zeitgeist and the perfect double of a post-club album and one to impress your friends at a dinner party.

Consistently brilliant and the highlights are legion. The way she pronounces Volcano on the brilliant ‘One Day’ the absolute peak.

Despite the slightly forbidding cover, arguably this is the Icelandic songstress’s most commercial work.

That its genesis comes after an attempt on her life is head scratching in a hundred ways. The search for perfect emotional connection on Joga is brilliant almost beyond belief.

Her second solo effort didn’t hit me with the ecstatic force of Debut at first. As the cover suggests, there is more colour and complexity within and it has lived well with repeated listening.

One of those works that keeps you coming back forever.

If there’s a better opener to any album anywhere than ‘stonemilker’ I have yet to hear it. The album does lose some impetus towards the back end but it is a work of genius. In places it sits with her greatest work, but is a little too inconsistent to hit the podium. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2026]

Sweet sensual and loved up Bjork is the closest she gets to easy listening. The cover tells the story. Pleasant and honeyed, but only half of what makes her great. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2026]

One of the most brilliant and original reimaginings of how an album can sound. More echoey soundscape than a song collection, yet mixed with some traditional instrumentation and a one person choir, this is exactly what I want Bjork to be, challenging, edgy and experimental. Oh, and gorgeous. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2026]
