Vulnicura

A brilliant album. Vulnicura, documents Bjork's recent break up in stunning style. As always, she finds new sounds and textures to bring her songs to life. Some beautiful tracks and indeed, a wonderful cycle of songs as a whole. It took a while for this one to sink in, like a lot of her albums, and that's what I love about Bjork, she never makes it easy but if you stick with her, your patience Will always be rewarded. Will she ever fail to amaze?

Incredibly dark and dense. Vulnicura is a taxing but rewarding listen. It does start to fall apart a little bit with the last half, but it never flat out does. (Edited)

The opening track Stonemilker is absolutely a blast, which I deemed the best song ever written by Bjork upon my first listen, and it continues standing the test of many more listens afterwards. The string arrangement in Stonemilker isn't all that complicated if you compare it to that of the other tracks but it's emotional and transcending melodically; the same can be said about her singing. The song's full of a kind of peaceful power.

The other tracks are experimental more or less, giving me mixed feelings depending on their ways of execution. I feel that the second half of the song Family is a class apart from its first half, hence this song being a semi-masterpiece in its entirety. Notget is also a pleasant one to have on the album, along with the soothing string work in Atom Dance.

Somehow I get the feeling that if it were not for Arca's participation, the album would have been better, at least on certain songs. Of course there's no denial that he brings a lot of beauteous modernism so that the album shines colorful rays of shimmering glows that vary in mood as it progresses, but Quicksand is too production-driven and spoils the fun.

Anyway, this takes some getting used to for me but the opening track is without a doubt an instant classic. Oh and nice use of etymology for the album title, which is so adorable! I also like Bjork's lyrics for most part; they're grammatically and semantically better than the shabby diction from many English-speaking singers nowadays.

When this was announced, I was really anticipating another Biophilia, with interesting production and instrumentation but slightly stilted lyrics. I am really glad with the way it turned out, it really does deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Homogenic and Vespertine. Probably my favourite moment on the album is that massive THHHHUDDDDD at the start of Family.

Having had some time to let it sink in, this is my favourite album she has done... Surpassing Vespertine and Homogenic.
