McCartney was truly a genius. The way he could just come up with melodies like this all the time just seems beyond what humans should be able to envision.

One of the best songs ever written, from the lyrics to the strings (copied by everyone for years afterwards) to one of the best melody lines in history.

Without doubt one of the Beatles greatest songs. This was certainly a cut above what everyone else was doing at the time. Mainly written by Paul McCartney, Eleanor Rigby, is a truly haunting track of loneliness in the hardest of times. It has a dark northern feel to it, the first of McCartney's 'kitchen sink' numbers. The lyrics are perfect, as is McCartney's vocal performance. It's one of the Beatles true masterpieces. Interestingly, the name Eleanor Rigby, as McCartney claims was a combination of the actress Eleanor Bron, whom the Beatles worked with on the Help! movie, and Rigby was the name of a shop in Bristol that McCartney noticed when visiting then girlfriend Jane Asher who was on an acting job down there. But the most intriguing thing is that there is a graveyard next to the place where McCartney originally met John Lennon with a gravestone with the name Eleanor Rigby on it, but McCartney says he never saw it. Strange.

Love the strings and the song as a whole. Just don't like how the stereo effect sometimes changes in the middle of a tone during singing. Edit: Great, just noticed that the version on the "1" album (remastered 2015) removed most of this annoying effect. I listened to the Revolver album (remastered 2009) before.

The best lyric McCartney ever delivered. See the "wearing the face that she keeps in a jar (ajar) by the door" line, for instance.
