I said I was gonna edit these in but that was two pages ago so I figure I'll just make a new post. On the whole Push Bar Man vs LLPJ thing, I agree with Skinny. While I enjoy most of the second disc of Barman, the 97 eps are in a class of their own and fit perfectly alongside each other as a single album. I'd argue that hearing those eps is perhaps the most vital part to understanding B&S as a band, or something like that. I like it and Sinister nearly equally, so I'm just going by the easy choice for this.
Edit: Nevermind, after intense listening I've decided those '97 eps are the best thing they ever did, work perfectly as one album, and are just about the greatest thing ever. Today has been one of intense discovery.
1. Lazy Line Painter Jane
2. If You're Feeling Sinister
3. Tigermilk
4. Push Barman to Open Old Wounds
5. Boy With The Arab Strap
6. Dear Catastrophe Waitress
7. Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant
8. The Life Pursuit
9. Third Eye Center
10. Write About Love
11. Storytelling
Near impossible to decide just five songs, but here's my best attempt
1. Lazy Line Painter Jane
2. If You're Feeling Sinister
3. Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying
4. The State I Am In
5. Belle & Sebastian/Put The Book Back on The Shelf/Photo Jenny (I honestly can't decide, just pick whichever one sounds best to you Cuba).
It's too hard to decide best B&S songs, I can't even include Boy With The Arab Strap or Me And The Major or We Rule The School or I'm A Cuckoo because there are just too many good ones.

The most interesting thing about their discog to me is their don’t-call-it-a comeback (Fold Your Handd Child is quite underrated, especially that first side) guest starring the pop, poppier and poppiest threesome of Dear Catastrophe Waitress, The Life Pursuit, and Write About Love in which they distanced themselves further & further from their signature sound. Personally, The Life Pursuit’s my fave of the trio since its healthy dose of New Pornographers/Jicks power pop shoots me up just fine, but it’s been interesting to see them reinvent their sound so drastically from their shy “It’s a secret” twee of Tigermillk to the almost unseemly “look at me now” decadence pop of Write About Love.
Essential
Tigermilk (just feels even more intimate & personal than IYFS, which is a big part of their appeal to begin with)
If You're Feeling Sinister
Lazy Line Painter Jane box
Solid Additions
Boy with The Arab Strap
The Life Pursuit
Fold Your Hands Child… (underrated, but admittedly weaker 2nd side)
Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Push Barman to Open Old Wounds
Interesting Excursions
Storytelling
Write about Love
Songs
1. the state i am in
2. electronic renaissance ( I hear your cries, BEA)
3. this is just a modern rock song
4. i Want the world to stop
5. it could have been a brilliant career

Aside from the 1997 EPs being massively underappreciated (probably due to the relative obscurity of the Lazy Line Painter Jane boxset, not to mention having two compilations which are very similar in nature resulting in inevitable vote-splitting), this is a darn good attempt at ranking Belle & Seb's albums. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Actually, I think the clear winner of this thread has been the Lazy Line Painter Jane boxset! The high quality of those '97 EPs dominated this discussion thread which leaves me pleased as punch. I'm sure a few people have been turned on to them by our proselytizing. Feels good to "spread the good word" of our Belle & Sebastian. LOL.
