I've never hated this album, but I've never gotten the appeal either. So, it's time for another listen.

Track picks
5. Beat It
6. Billie Jean
8. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

I also can get behind Gowi's track selection, spot on!

Despite being a hardcore 80s fanatic, I don't think this album is really that phenomenal as a whole. It still earns a spot on my top 100 albums of the 1980s list because of tracks 4, 5, 6, and 8, but the rest is frankly just good, not great. I think Bad actually has more variety and melodic power than this.

In my opinion, Prince's albums are a much better example of 80s pop taken to its artistic height, although for me Thriller actually outmatches 1999, which was released around the same time.

A stunning collection of great songs. I prefer Off the Wall, but this is like a greatest hits. Agree with Gowi that 'Beat It' is the weakest thing here, though I'd put 'The Girl is Mine' in my top three or four so I wouldn't pay too much attention to my opinion on the matter. Close to pop perfection.

(Prince is still better.)

As cool as this is, I can prefer both Off The Wall and Bad depending on my mood. Also I do much prefer Prince, especially 1999 which is easily my favourite of his albums, it should really be on my overall chart...

Tracks 4-6: Best tracks.

I got shivers thinking Naples had returned.

Great album overall. And put me in the camp that believes "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " is the best song, although I might say Billie Jean on another day

Top to Bottom this is the perfect or one of the absolute perfect pop albums. It's soulful, smooth, funky, absolutely grandiose and fun/dancey af in equal measure. This and Off The Wall are a toss up for best of his, and Bad ain't far behind. Yeah this is just one of the greatest albums ever made. No doubt in my mind. MJ was soooo damn greeeeeaaaat! As was Quincy.

And yeah, I'm with skinny on Prince being the hreateat of the two and probably the best 80s act/artist/band of them all. But I'd say pitting Off the Wall/Thriller/Bad against Dirty Mind or 1999/Purple Rain/Sign O The Times makes for a pretty even comparison. However Prince also had Parade. And Around The World In A day. And Lovesexy, etc etc. So Prince takes it.

Anyway, don't believe the bull - this album is a godsend. Fun for the whole family!

A solid pop album (you'd hope the biggest selling album of time would be so). Wanna Be Startin Somethin' and Billie Jean are absolute classics, PYT and Baby Be Mine are fun, lively R&B, Beat It is a fairly solid song adorne dwith a great Van halen solo, and Thriller is a very well crafted novelty. Only on the ballads does the album falter - The Lady In My Life and The Girl Is Mine are a bit too syrupy for me, and that bit with McCartney is just yuk. Human Nature's good tho.

All in all, a solid album. 7/10.
