- Post subject: Tournament Express - Greatest Actress Performances
|
Pitch for an express tournament solely for the best performances by actresses. We did one similar to this, but it was about two years back and it was for all performances, so unsurprisingly it became somewhat of a sausage fest.
Thus, I suggest this as a remedy. Rules would be the same as in all previous tourneys (with four nominations allowed per participant). Anyone interested enough to give it a shot?
Just in case, here's mine:
Gloria Swanson, Sunset Blvd
Diane Keaton, The Godfather, Part II
Ingrid Bergman, Autumn Sonata
Emmanuelle Riva, Hiroshima mon amour

ooh fun!!!
My four:
Maria Falconetti - The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
Bette Davis - All About Eve 1950 (you're going down, Gloria Swanson! lol)
Shirley MacLaine - The Apartment (1960)
Madhabi Mukherjee - Charulata (1964)
------
And I'd like to put these out for your consideration. I'd adore you if y'all nominated these, cuz I had a hard fucking time choosing the 4 I did. These are why it was so tough:
Katherine Hepburn - Thr Philadelphia Story (1949)
Giulietta Masina - Nights of Cabiria (1957)
Irène Jacob - The Double Life of Veronique (1991)
Diane Keaton - Annie Hall (1977)
Also, some are a given, such as Streep in Sophie's Choice (but you never know). He'll part of me wanted to take Falconetti and Bette Davis out of my choices because I know they'll be picked by someone else. But I don't know. I can't claim to be smart enough to game the nominations that much. _________________ -Ryan

Well that makes three of us. Let's bring this one to a very deserving victory.
And more reason to love Mercury, I can comfortably include two from his recommended nominees...
Giulietta Masina - Nights of Cabiria (1957)
Irene Jacob - The Double Life of Veronique (1991)
Greta Garbo - Queen Christina (1933)
Emily Watson - Breaking the Waves (1996)
(And just so I'm not a total ass kisser...)
As for Katharine Hepburn, The Lion in Winter is the correct choice (and for comedies from 1940 I'd take Rosalind Russell from His Girl Friday over K-Hep)
Hoping Adele Exarchopoulos (did I get that right? Haven't read it in over a year) also gets mentioned for Blue is the Warmest Color. Although Lea Seydoux was phenomenal too Adele was the true revelation and the more complex role in my opinion.

alright how bout
Meiko Kaji in Lady Snowblood
Setsuko Hara in Tokyo Twilight (her best performance imo)
Sissy Spacek in 3 Women
Simone Simon in Cat People
now somebody nominate Bibi Andersson for something, not to mention Sigourney Weaver in Alien and Jodi Foster for Silence of the Lambs (figured I'd let someone else snag those because like who else is gonna nominate anyone from a film called Cat People if I don't step up y'know?)

I was also thinking of nominating Adele for Blue Is Thr Warmest Color. Hers was definitely my favorite performance in that film, and one of the best ever. But she was one of my 4 nominations for the overall best performance tournament we did a year or 2 ago, so I decided to try something new. But yes she should get nominated. Oh and I'm glad we are on the same page so damn much, badseed. You my boy, blue!!
Also yes absolutely on S. Weaver in Alien! Please someone choose her. Jodie foster was great in Silence of the Lambs, so yeah I support that too.
I was thinking of going with Shirley MacLaine in Irma La Douce. In a way every bit as great as her performance in the apartment. But it was a tough choice that I had to make.
Edit: I am so bothered by missing the Alien performance I'm torn about editing my choices... decisions, decisions, ... _________________ -Ryan

Some bullet points:
- Agree on pretty much everything dbz said. Double the Bibi Andersson.
- Shirley MacLaine was sexy as fuck in Irma la Douce. Love her in that.
- Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind deserves a mention. Never before (and probably never since) has an actress got so much screen time and she knocked it out of the park. Powerhouse performance.

Yeah, they're pretty even in my books. Two incredible performances. My nomination could have gone to either of them quite easily. Hoping someone else nominates her. Picking only 4 is difficult _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!
