Not the genesis of, but the mainstream breakout of a style that brought Mavi, Mike, Pink Siifu, Slauson Malone, Sage Elsesser and many more to the music community's attention. Shortly before Covid, I got to watch Earl and his mom have a talk about the genesis of this record - and while the talk ended up feeling like Earl's way of giving his mom (academic influencer as she is) a moment in the spotlight, Earl seems like he's taking on a sense of hauntology intersected with critical race theory. Love how these beats fragment and fall away. Powerful record.

Listened to it once, so cannot speak on it that much. As I remember, it's quite good, especially the length.

Of albums that came out in the last few years, I think I listened to this one the most. Alongside Solace, his best work yet. It's like he takes you on a trip through his mind. Sound of deteriorating mental state/breakdown.

I was gonna use the adjective "fragmentary" to describe this, then I noticed you'd used "fragment" (the verb), and I'm sure it was a coincidence but I still didn't want to come across as a cheap copycat so I decided against using it, and then I started to doubt myself and I think I may have seen your use of it as I scrolled which then probably planted the seed, but the entire thing must've been subconscious and lightning quick, so the noble thing to do seems to me to make it conscious - publically verbalising it (via type, not voice) - even though there's a very real chance it's not even a real thing/situation.

^^^^^^^^^^
That's my album review.

Sure is, and this album has a plethora. It's the culmination of Earl's decade long experimentation with off beats, unique flow and extremely personal and poignant stories. I can't wait for his next album, even though there's not much chance he'll top this. In fact, if it was 5-10 minutes longer, it'd rap album of the decade for me. Add a few songs off of Feet of Clay, and voila.

Personally, I found it relieving to listen to a rap album that didn’t have 20+ minutes of skits ballooning it up to over an hour.

I'm intrigued. Where can I find this album with more than 20 minutes of skits?

Something about the personal stories of this album made it seem more focused than other abstract hip hop albums. Though I wasn't in love with SRS in the same way that I loved Madvilliainy. But I guess it's unfair for me to compare Earl Sweatshirt to MF Doom, since I hold a high opinion of him.
