Plain and simple.

First, when I was 16 and really starting to get into rock, I thought just about every REO Speedwagon and Rush song was from Styx, because I had heard of them first and the voices were pretty similar. I also thought for a long time that "Do It Again" by Steely Dan was a Santana song.

Downloaded this on limewire back in my Nirvana obsessed youth and thought it was theirs for the longest time, blew my mind when I found out it wasn't.

When I first heard "Just Got Started Lovin' You" from my most favorite singer James Otto, I thought that it was fellow country singer Chris Young.

God bless you and James and Chris always!!! Smile Smile Smile

Probably not alone in thinking this was a R.E.M. song. Its a very easy mistake to make. The vocals are indistinguishable and the lyrics and melody are pretty similar too.

I downloaded this as part of a "More Songs About Buildings And Food" torrent. Obviously whoever made it got "The Big Country" confused with "Big Country". Its actually not a bad way to end the album, fades out nicely.

I always thought the Beach Boys did "Wipeout".

I also frequently confused REO Speedwagon and Supertramp songs.

I'm technologically and just generally inept so I am not going to try to successfully put a video of a song here.

Instead ill just say I once thought "Comment; If All Men Are Truly Brothers" was really a Wilco song instead of originally a Charles Wright song.

Also made same mistake with viva Las Vegas, thought that was a DKs song straight up.

Eric etc blah blah blah...

I thought "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" was by Fall Out Boy for the longest time. Also thought "No Tears" by Tuxedomoon was a Bauhaus song for some time.

All my stupid friends thought that "Red Red Wine" was Bob Marley and the anarchy of youtube only reinforced that idea. I still meet people who think it's him.
