Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 7% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.5/100, a mean average of 77.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.5.

”Beatsongs” was The Blue Aeroplanes’ follow-up to their much acclaimed ”Swagger” album. The album was recorded in the U.S. and produced by Elvis Costello and Larry Hirsch. It was their second album on a major label (Ensign) and their highest charting, reaching no. 33 in the UK Albums Chart.
It has the trademarks of ”Swagger”, great guitar-lines, spoken lyrics and some great harmony-vocals on several; actually an overall sound not unlike Australia’s Midnight Oil.
”Beatsongs” is very consistent, containing no weak songs, with at least a handful very good songs. My two favourites are ”Angelwords”, ”Colour Me”, both some great melodic guitar-lines, and ”Yr Own World” which also have the nice harmony vocals. Also a great cover-version of Paul Simon’s ”The Boy in the Bubble”.

Truly lovely album featuring beautifully composed songs with great inde style guitar and keyboards. The vocals are particularly interesting being delivered half sung half spoken. There is no filler, but faves include: My Hurricane; Aeroplane Blue (which I heard back in 1991 on a great BBC Radio London rock programme); Colour Me, and the magnificent closer, Sixth Continent.
