Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 24% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.7/100, a mean average of 74.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.9.

HERE'S WHERE THE STRINGS COME IN
Matthew Sweet’s girlfriend deserved the attention. I’m not saying otherwise. It was a refreshing punch to singer-songwriter power pop and the guitars of Robert Quine of Television fame simply sang. I'm just saying that this is BETTER. And somehow lost in the swoon fest over Girlfriend, this even more exceptional singer-songwriter album somehow got lost.
It's album of two distinct sides. Side one is power pop in the Girlfriend vein. Hell, Matthew Sweet & Robert Quine make exceptional contributions to this half of the record with Sweet's distinctive vocal even heard on "Weeping Wine". But, it's the second side that blows my mind. The best symphonic pop this white boy has ever heard.
Grade: A. Easily one of the best, if not the best, singer-songwriter albums of '91. I have no idea how this got overlooked. Allmusic opines that it was ahead of its time. That's its symphonic pop was out of place in the grungey, lo-fi less-is-more- vibe of 1991. I just know that it's a bonafide gem that will shine particularly bright for Gowi and all you other lovers of transcendent singer-songwrtiter power pop. Say hello to your new Girlfriend!
Oh Lloyd, such a descent man. Ideal for the ones trying to live with lust but keeping the mind morally or ethically sane.
