Ashes and Roses is the twelfth studio album by Mary Chapin Carpenter, her fourth studio album for Zoe/Rounder Records, as well as her fourth record produced by Matt Rollings.
"One day it dawned I had run out of road," Carpenter sings on I Tried Going West, an uninspired re-hash of The Way I Feel from The Age of Miracles. It's a telling lyric for an exhaustive set of songs that retread territory that Carpenter has covered many times before to better results. She borrows the "food in my belly" line from her previously recorded cover of Passionate Kisses on Don't Need Much to Be Happy.
Soul Companion, the rocky duet with James Taylor, is the strongest melody in this set. Other highlights include the touching Transcendental Reunion, Another Home and the tearful Fading Away.
The producer on this one appears to be on autopilot, doing nothing to enhance the performances and song structures.
This one sits with The Calling as her most unimpressive studio output.
NOT RECOMMENDED.
Condensed to a 7" Single:
A-Side: Soul Companion
B-Side: Transcendental Reunion
