Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 9% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.2/100, a mean average of 75.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.1.

pretty good c and w - pop mixture
Great songwriting, vocals and guitar-playing. This is a very clean album with high quality original songs on it. "Dolphins", "Faretheewell" and "Everybody's Talkin'" are fantastic. The honesty that Fred is able to convey is remarkable, especially on the previously mentioned tracks and especially especially on "Dolphins". I love how that song basically embodies his whole being while remaining sop simple. Every song is enjoyable. A clear influence on Tim Buckley.
I liked this much more than I anticipated. Quality songwriting.
Listening to this was an interesting experience. The whole dreamy vibe, with the strange echoey production especially on the classic opener "The Dolphins" sounded so unique. Also it does sound like it had a slight influence on Buckley. Fred Neil's vocals here are the usual unaffected cool, velvety excellence. And the themes are consistently fascinating.
It is interesting to see how far he went in the more dreamy experimentalism with this album compared to his previous album "Bleecker and MacDougal". While I personally feel like the songwriting and the actual songs on his previous album are more engaging and fun, the production and general flow of this album makes it ascend slightly over his excellent debut.
Also that last song, the 8 minute weird psychedelic instrumental, is cool as hell.
Grade: 8.7/10
Magnificient folk album. A must have.
'Everybody's talking', 'Dolphins', here are the originals!
