"1984" is an album that will likely appeal to the inner-10 year old in everyone, (if that inner-10 year-old still exists, that is.)
The garage band aspects that defined Van Halen's first five albums (with David Lee Roth, natch,) have been smoothed, but not eliminated - and the results are compelling: an era-defining release.
Van Halen - when David Lee Roth is in the band - mixes characteristics from diverse musical genres, creating something unique. "1984," along with "Diver Down," "A Different Kind of Truth," "Fair Warning," and "Women and Children First," are among the band's most diverse.
On "1984," the band continues to experiment, and push its sound: this time, there's new wave ("I'll Wait;" "Jump" "1984";) Zeppelin-esque riff-rock ("Drop Dead Legs";) a smirking, ZZ Top-like hard boogie ("Hot For Teacher;) a metallic rockabilly tribute to a punk band, ("Top Jimmy;") and several songs that raise Van Halen's signature sound to performance art standards, ("Panama;" "Girl Gone Bad;" and "House of Pain.")

Actually I think this is absolutely awful. Jump is hilarious but the rest is just unbearable. Far, very far from the quality of their first...
"Hot For Teacher;" "Panama;" "Jump;" and "I'll Wait" are the hit pop singles, (Think what you want about the two synth songs - I like them both,) but the album tracks... "Drop Dead Legs" sounds like Led Zeppelin-on-steroids; "Top Jimmy" is a rockabilly tribute to punk; and "House of Pain" has the best outro in rock history, for my money.

The peak of the Roth years in terms of listenability. They had more energy and more frenetic playing in the 70s, but this is a great swan song. Hagar never topped it, and Roth's solo work never even comes remotely close.

This is my go-to album when I'm going to make love to a girl. It works for them and it definitely works for me. It has all the lust, love, and rock you could need.
