Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 79.4/100, a mean average of 78.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.6.

"Katy Lied" is one of Steely Dan's great classic albums ( OK, they all are!) from when they were still a real band, and not "just" the Becker/Fagen duo.

The Becker/Fagen aim for perfection is very much apparent here. Great production and playing. Inspired songwriting and dark thought-provoking lyrics.

Most tracks are incredible catchy and melodic; especially "Rose Darling" and "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" are likely to "hit" you the first time you here them.

The opening track "Black Friday" is a surprisingly heavy track ( for Dan!!) that sets the scene right from the very beginning. Like always there is a great variation in rhytmths and styles, but this is never a problem because everything is done with great artistic skill.

My first version of the album had a slightly "woolen" sound, but on the 1999 re-mastered version the sound is perfect.

A 1975 classic with catchy standouts:"Rose Darling" and "Everyone's Gone To The Movies"

In my view the best Dan album full of really great tracks my favourites being Rose Darlin and the creepy but catchy Everyone's gone to the Movies, Luv Dr Wu. Lots of light and shade, interesting but as ever inpenertrable lyrics. My original vinyl album had a very muddy sound CD much much better - Love it

Steely Dan begins to assume a fuller sound with jazz influences coming to the fore, a trend that would culminate in Aja a few years later. Always gifted with the pen, Donald Fagen has written perhaps his most interesting set of lyrics with this album, with "Everyone's Gone To The Movies" surely his creepiest ever.

"Doctor Wu" is the only major highlight in this bizarre set of tunes. The Minutemen covered it on their "Double Nickels" album.

"Bad Sneakers" and "Black Friday" are also worth hearing.

This was the first major recording project for Michael McDonald. I think he was hardly known at the time. (Edited)
