Fans of Ghana highlife stuff, you gotta check out this Atakora Manu if you haven't already, seems like a good one. Also checked out this Tom Recchion album that I saw on some old OPN list on the quietus, some really cool bit of loop weirdness from 96. And I finally got around to listening to Get Up With It by Miles Davis. On a shorter album I probably wouldn't have minded Red China Blues so much, but being that deep in made it really frustrating for me. Pretty forgivable though since the main attractions on the album deliver the goods.
I'm finding the new Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith album to be very addictive. The way she's filled in the whole sound palette, there's this richness in the low end that mixes in with the acoustic instruments and it's just so rich sounding, and the songwriting is... different. Sort of a weird synergy between the poppier and ambient impulses of the last album? I dunno, still early days but I'm loving it.
New Amnesia Scanner EP is pretty cool too, I wasn't exactly blown away by Chingy (tho I still liked it, and the video was really cool) but that seems to be my least favorite one on here. Some interesting stuff that will take a few listens to unpack for sure.
Oh and there was that Keith Rowe & Martin Kuchen collab, that was nice, didn't seem particularly essential though. Though I did have it following up ErstLive 007 and that's been really getting stuck in the part of my brain that digs Rowe, so maybe I was just too preoccupied with that.

So just some quick scattered things... not gonna write up too much about the show I went to, but it was really cool. Randy Jones, I think he's local and hasn't really released anything, but I've seen him before. His stuff is cool, some free-form electroacoustic type stuff, I dug it. Wasn't as into Timm Mason, he was doing some stuff with samples and feedback looping, but I don't know, it just felt sort of clumsy to me a lot of the time. But Strategy was awesome, basically doing a version of his recent album with all the effected faint signals over radio + noise. Really cool to see it get put together live.
On the new release front, this Gobby album is pretty weird. I enjoy it, but I don't really know how to explain how I feel about it any more than that. Like he's doing stuff with vocals and shooting for a more accessible sound, and I'm not exactly sure if all of it works. I think it's one to check out tho for sure. And then this new surprise o9 thing that was put up on his bandcamp on Saturday is more of a niche interest sort of thing, but if you dig on IDM stuff it's maybe worth a listen. It seems like fresh territory for him, but I don't think it reaches the levels of his best stuff.

I've been feeling a bit down since Tuesday, so I haven't been listening to much music. Just wanted to listen to people talking, or nothing, for the most part. I don't know if I was in the right place to take in that new album from The Field. I've never been the biggest enthusiast for his stuff but I don't think I was giving it a fair shake. Feel like it's turning around though, I'll be back into the swing of things soon.

Yeah, really wish I could see them do it live with the washing machine on stage but it seems like they were just doing the USA east coast & Europe. I haven't checked in with the album in a little bit, I'll be tossing it on again sometime this weekend though cause yeah, that album is great.
So there was just a solid Wanda Group release in February, and now one I like even more just came out today. It's still that sort of Ferrari lineage, collage of field recordings type of musique concrete, but this one goes to some harsher places and I think I have some personal biases towards that. Worth checking out for fans of this whole sort of thing. This label it came out on, Opal Tapes, I think I've seen their name pop up in a few spots, seems like something I should investigate further.

Ah thanks for asking I'm doing good now. If you ever see me listen to 8 or more albums I'm definitely doing good mentally at least, I can't do that sort of thing when I'm down. I got up to some stuff this weekend as per usual so these weekend days are a bit lighter but I had some good times throughout.
So I was checking out the staff lists on bleep.com, and noticed some talk of this Rian Treanor debut 12" from last year. Checked it out and it's pretty cool, like if Mark Fell was danceable. Some really cool listening, seems like someone to watch out for. My adventures thru the Erstwhile back catalog continue to be very rewarding as well, Lidingö is really fantastic. I should really look more into Andrea Neumann, they were on this 2012 album Messier Objects that I'm a big fan of as well, they seem to be making my kind of noises.
As far as other listening goes, I've noticed that there are albums that I'm convinced that I've already listened to recently and then am surprised to find that I hadn't. Like that Phthalocyanine album, I must have listened to it some time towards the end of the year because it still felt fresh to me, but yeah hadn't listened in 3 months. It's weird for me with some albums that I'm intimately familiar with, a single listen gets feeling so substantial.

Decided to try and be funny and start off 4/4 with the steady throb of Tim Hecker's tech house side project thing, Jetone. Sorta kept that going with Lee Gamble, but it didn't take long to go in hard on the opposite direction with Songs About My Cats.
Woke up this morning to see that Deakin's kickstarter thing leaked before the general sale date of 4/8. Was too curious to not download it though, and I think I'll be picking it up on Friday (even if it is only gonna be on iTunes supposedly), because it is pretty great! I think it will please a lot of the people who prefer the mid-period Animal Collective stuff, without sounding derivative of those albums. Footy is such a jam.
I would've listened to more music today but I got Enter The Gungeon and it's a really good video game. Now that I have the hang of it tho I'll probably listen to my own music while playing (though it has a good enough soundtrack).

So Cafe OTO is a venue, and they provide an excellent service giving digital releases to some of the cooler live sets performed there. I liked this one they had last year with Rie Nakajima & Phill Niblock. And this year they just put out a Senyawa set that I really want to pick up. But nothing had hit me on a "STOP EVERYTHING, GET THIS" level as much as when I found out they're giving the most significant release that Keith Fullerton Whitman's Redactions piece is going to get (according to his blog post). I've been keeping up with some of the other performances in this set-up that were up on soundcloud, and it's been really compelling stuff, but this one really does seem the strongest and the right one to get the official release. Some really stunning live electronics, first half operates in a weird place with noises and empty space and fragments of nice tonal stuff, so it's not abrasive exactly but probably a little on the difficult side of things. 2nd half pushes it into some very pretty territory though, sort of like Generators but with a different enough feel to keep it fresh. Still digesting and figuring out where it sits in relation to everything else this year, but I'm confident it's sitting pretty high.

I played some more of that Enter The Gungeon game a bit more, and still kept going with the included soundtrack. There were some weird quirks to it that kept me leaving it on, and I looked it up turned out it's done by Doseone! Never would have guessed, but it does explain the lil bits of weirdness. But yeah, hopefully I can get better at this game so I can hear the music for the later levels.
I saw Bee Mask mention this Garry Bradbury album on twitter and decided to check it out. It's really good! I guess this guy was in a band called Severed Heads, on some of their albums in the 80s, so I should probably look into those, looks like a lot is already in the database here from Borejko I think? But yeah, I don't think this album gave me much of an idea of what that band will sound like. This is all over the place, like at first, each track is like a self contained thing with a distinct aesthetic, but they're all unified in a freeform approach to construction, I dunno, it's pretty wild stuff and seems like it could be a grower from an already good starting position.
