Recommendations For Weird Music?

PurpleHazel · 2018-01-22T20:28:06-05:00

I love music that marches to the beat of its own drummer (literally or figuratively!): Captain Beefheart, Zappa, post-1980 Tom Waits, Pere Ubu, Can, early Funkadelic, Faust, Mr. Bungle etc. Looking for recommendations of weird albums from the last 20 years. Some more recent albums I've already heard that fit the bill include the Fiery Furnaces' Blueberry Boat, Esperanza Spaulding's Emily's D+ Evolution and Janelle Monae's The Arch-Android. Some Radiohead, Bjork and Spiderland are close to what I'm thinking of too. Looking more for stuff in the rock/R&B spectrum, but I'll take recs for rap (heard Madvilliany already) and recent jazz that's not already on any of Scaruffi's lists.

It's not in the genre you want, but it's definitely not the run of the mill music.

Thanks for your recs! I like Schoenberg a lot. Haven't listened to that much, so something new to check out.

what kind of weird you want, you want ppl fighting with paper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAUwnymL9p8, or like beating away at a giant metal wire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4GCYhTLWXo or vocal cord danger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF4QszdBvl0 or maybe some safer poems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NOZpFlXUiA or maybe some brain synth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfQ0my3DhTM or what? maybe you're looking more old school how about Edgar Varese and the Jazzmen http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2009/06/edgar-var%C3%A8se-and-the-jazzmen-mp3s.html

Not sure weird is the first word to come to mind with some of those videos. 😄 Thanks for compiling them! I actually really like Varese (like the good Zappa fan I am). Like that Solid Eye cover. Actually, a lot of cool covers in this thread!

Been meaning to check this out. I'm a big P-Funk/Bernie Worrell fan.
