However, although we just went through a competition to see what year was best, and the 60's did quite well, it's because the back half of the decade is loaded. I can agree that 1969 is one of the very best years for music, same with 67, and throw in 68 and 66 while you're at it, but are they enough to claim top decade spot? Especially when I think the 70's had a better complete decade. 70, 71, 72, 73, 75, 76, 77, 79 all could have gone far in this competition and I personally would have been fine with it.

Just food for thought of course.

You seem to be saying the 60s weren't an awesome decade until about 66 or 67. Basically the time when rock and roll became Rock. Or the type of music most of us here rate the highest. But the 60s were actually pretty great right from the beginning. Even pre- British Invasion and pre-Beatles. There was girl groups and boy groups starting way back in 1960, Brill Building music, Motown,
Countrypolitan, folk music, and even some 1950s Stars were still pretty good in the early sixties. It didn't all start with Revolver or Sgt. Pepper or Velvet Underground. To most of us it might seem like it was a back-loaded decade, but in reality it wasn't.

I definitely understand what you are saying, but as Fischman mentioned, none of that does much for him, and I'm the same way. Well, save for Motown at least. Motown is the main reason I'm here talking to you guys now. The early years of hit after hit after hit after hit for Motown is beyond classic and it is some of the music I can always talk about or listen to with my parents. However, my favorite years for Motown are later on when the Jackson 5 started putting out records (69-73ish) and when Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye got more musical freedom and started putting out their best work ('70 onward).

For me I embrace the late 60's as a whole more thoroughly simply because albums became what we know it as in terms of a format and often times concept. There are some great great albums in jazz, pop, and rock before the mid-late 60's, but there isn't that across the board consistent greatness of album output like the late 60's and 70's. Just my take on that.

Music production for pop groups matured between 66-69... period.

Good music before then. Of course.
