You Got Me is the closest thing to a hit in the entire Roots discography, for what it's worth. None of their other singles has gone as high on the US r&b chart or charted in more countries. It also won a Grammy and helped this become their only platinum album.
In some ways, that's what I liked about it, but the "popist" in me wanted a hit - somehow that matters to me and I don't know why. My aesthetic has always been that way - you gotta be able to do both - swoon the intellectual, but get whit the homies too.
And yeah it charted, but not even top 10. I can see why it charted, but I wouldn't really call You Got Me a banger/hit. Other tracks on that album were just as good/it is good, but it's not a clear standout to the rest (which speaks to the quality of the record really).

I don't really know Rush at all and this is the first album of theirs I've ever heard. Easily listenable prog rock without the wankery and self indulgence that prog can sometimes be accused of. I'm not sure I've heard any of these songs before so from one listen I found Jacob's Ladder and Natural Science the most interesting, but the whole album is solid and very enjoyable. 8/10, and 12/23 for 1980.

Pretty accessible, bright post-punk with a bunch of tunes that are quite good. A fun listen, but I'm a bit puzzled as to why it would be one of someone's favorites ever. Nothing is on the level of "Love My Way." 3.5/5.

I think the second one should have an extra track or two on it. Anyways, this is a wacky synthpop album that predates Laurie Anderson and is something that I honestly like more than Big Science, which I've never really enjoyed. So, I guess Ann Steel was some classically trained singer, and she teamed up with this Italian electronic musician to make this album. For 1979 this is pretty forward thinking in the pop realm. I'd highly recommend it just for the fun of it's loony lyrics and charming production.
Baystate, it's hard to pick one of those for you, because I don't think that you will really like any of them (of the ones that I know). The Jesus Lizard is my favorite of those, so check it out.

I'm torn on this one. I think the instrumental side of it is fantastic, but I feel about half the tracks have mediocre to terrible vocal performances. So yeah, I could see myself really liking this had it been executed just a tad better. But maybe it'll grow. I do like it better than other Tyler albums I've checked out.

The Ecstatic by Mos Def
A pretty wild ride. One of the most interesting hip hop albums that I've listened to recently, it's a collage of so many vastly different styles. I'm pretty sure that I've only started to appreciate the album after 3 listens, but I already love it. It's also a well written and catchy record, not a difficult listen. 8.5 or 9/10

Somewhere In Time by Iron Maiden
I have this like/dislike relationship with Iron Maiden... I really like the vocal range/bass tone. I dislike the near hair metal sound. I liked some of the breakdowns and rhythms they have, but not a fan of their polished sound... dunno. I'll just say I like 1986 from BEA rather than 1986 from RYM.

I feel like a brief song by song initial reaction to this album. I had not heard any of these songs before.
Roundabout - That bass at the beginning is impressive! This is the highest rated song on BEA for this album but for me it's more the Genesis side of prog I'm not too keen on instead of the Pink Floyd type I love. I wasn't as caught up in it as I would like from a long song. But I can see the influences this has on some of the music I like today. Funnily although I had never heard this song before two of my son's recognised it (apparently it's a bit of a meme now, and on one of my son's piped through the workplace playlist). What sort of bizarro world is this where they're schooling me on a 70's prog rock song? ๐คฃ
Cans and Brahms - interesting take on Brahms, but I would have liked a bit more from it.
We Have Heaven - now this I like...a little bit of weirdness that I appreciate.
South Side Of The Sky - much like Roundabout, impressive musicianship but it just didn't really click with me.
Five Percent of Nothing - not bad, but a pit pointless on it's own?
Long Distance Runaround - the best part of this song was the end and the way it transitioned into The Fish.
The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) - the best song so far, a cool sound, a dash of psych, and a really good groove that I was getting into.
Mood For a Day - this sounds like someone practising, albeit someone proficient who doesn't need to practice
Heart of the Sunrise - easily the best song on the album, lots of variety that kept me interested and entertained. Great closer.
Overall a good album but I enjoyed Close To The Edge (which I also listened to through this game) more. I give it a low 7.5/10, and place it 18/24 for 1971.
Zep, of the two I've heard I like Big Blood better.

If the lyrics were generic nonsense, this would get a 3.5 from me. I dig the noisy instrumentals quite a bit. But of course, I had a feeling I should really read the lyrics. And they're just disgusting. Kind of a similar dynamic I got from the one Misfits album I heard, which I liked musically but had constant rape and gore lyrics. 2/5.
