I'm torn on this one. On one hand they mastered this sound that feels and sounds simultaneously like life and death - this warm sound that decays in dissonance. Incredibly intriguing. On the other hand it's that for 2 hours. I know it changes... but sometimes it barely feels like it does. 3.5/80.

This was quite something. Repetitive and sometimes abrasive industrial with some great, stacatto-like, short and impulsive piano melodies. It's very good the first 15-20 minutes, but then I just lose concentration. And it's also way too long imo, an hour and 15 minutes of this stuff is a bit too much to handle. Solid idea, decent execution, but gets boring fast. Actually similar to what Seth just wrote, intriguing but too long. b 6.5/10

I'll give you a break from metal, although there are excellent metal choices here. But go with Ox.

I love his choice of the electric violin, and the techniques he employs create some really nifty tones and effects. He uses a slapping technique with the bow that gives off this awesome hurdy gurdy effect with certain works or loops, and on others, his violin does sound quite a lot like a hollow-body guitar, which I think gives him a tremendous advantage given the versatility the violin holds over the guitar. I love, love the way he layers loops to get those nice contrapuntal or counter-rhythmic effects, which is something I aspire to in my music (though, I'd rather multi-track). Overall, his music is really beautiful (though, I'm not really sure that it's as danceable as he would hope), yet it's fun and never comes close to being overbearing like some other avant-garde music. My only complaint would be the lack of accompaniment, which I think would be befitting of a lot of his music.
It's hard to say to what extent I can agree with his article, because he doesn't really elaborate on what artists or music he considers "crass and gross" (not too difficult to guess, though), or what artists he admires (harder to guess), beyond La Monte Young and Chuck Berry, which makes it difficult to draw any conclusions on his taste. He doesn't seem to accept that most musical artists (even outside a "poisoned environment") are going to be neither idiosyncratic nor genius, or that nothing can be drawn from music that isn't those things (despite his own music being derived from "Fascist hillbilly music"). I understand his points, but I guess I'm not entirely sure what he's envisioning for music at large. Maybe, one of his books would help me out.

Given the name, I was expecting something more serene and dream-like, but what I got would give you some really effed up nightmares if you listened to this as you went to sleep. I was surprised by it's eerie, sample-heavy atmosphere, which was OK, but not exactly what I was wanting. I am interested to listen to some other albums though, because this was certainly creative.
Jameth, glad to have you back. I know how you feel man. We all need a break. Give Supersilent a listen.

This is the number one ranked Cocteau Twins album on this site, and I can see why...it is a gorgeous dream pop album...and this site loves dream pop. Personally I probably prefer Victorialand, and Blue Bell Knoll ever so slightly. I do think some of the songs could have benefited from being a bit longer as I kept being about to get caught up in them and they would end, and for that reason the closer, Frou-frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires, was one of the tracks I enjoyed more, as well as Iceblink Luck which I know well from listening to their singles a lot rather than their albums back then. Very good album in terms of overall tone, consistency, and flow as well. I give it 8/10, and rank it 23/44 for 1990.
As I listen to any album I pick that I haven't heard before (Anabelas by Bubu was great by the way) I think I would like to listen to Yukihiro Takahashi- What, me Worry? so go with that.

A fun synthpop album that occsionally surprises with its creativity and catchiness. Musically it follows the trends of the time, but Takahashi, being a former member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, is more than capable of delivering an album with a unique sound. This is the first I've listened to of his; Sakamoto and Hosono were more active than him.
It's me again Purple, and this time it's Massive Attack's turn. And yeah, Bubu is awesome.

I don't know if Muse is just growing on me or if this is really their best, but I definitely enjoyed this more than the previous two from this game. Catchier and more energetic, while keeping the good qualities they already had. Still, this is not something I gravitate to, but it's good for what it is. 3/5.

Glad I got another listen of this. My first listen I thought the music was really lame, but it's just subtle. Yes the beat and vocals are more important, as with any rap song, but musically this is a pretty cool record too (my first listen didn't think so). I just wish the mix was different for these ears, but it's pretty good as is. Some of the rapping caught my attention as well. I think I like Raspberry Fields, Iron Galaxy, and Painkiller best. 3.5 or 80. Could be higher with more listens. I should just believe the consensus, but it is a bit long/felt like it wore out its welcome a little too soon than I wanted.
2. Flood - Boris (& then B) - one of my favorite finds of this game. And yes, there's aspects of that Muse album that indicate it's them at their height, even if some would suggest that's when they started to suck pending on whose world view you want to believe.

An influential trip hop album just as good as Mezzanine. Great mood throughout. I didn't realize I knew so many of their songs already - Unfinished Sympathy was the only one I remembered before listening to this. Great, important album. 8/10, and 24/38 for 1991.
