Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 9% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.9/100, a mean average of 74.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.5.

A very minimal and droney record.
Very slow paced and patient.
Interesting.

I'm sick of these comments that complain about this album being too long and drone-y. This is a record that's almost universally regarded as a masterpiece of its genre - to complain it's too long and drone-y is like complaining To Pimp A Butterfly has too many lyrics. If it's not your type of thing then there's probably something off with your relationship to ambient music as a whole rather than this particular album, c'mon guys the sub-50 ratings are a bit gratuitous don't you think?

This couldn't be made by humans. It must be made by some divine being...

Ambient music is typically the type of music I put on to do homework. I can't put anything with lyrics on, it will distract me. One late night at the library, as I was cramming for the toughest chemistry exam of the semester, I began to play this epic on Spotify. As it was playing, I was slowly becoming less focused on the studying and was becoming increasingly captivated by what I think is a masterpiece of the genre. At one point, my entire mind was filled with astral imagery. I imagined myself floating through some spectacular areas of space, or walking through the Arctic wilderness under a dark, rich blue sky with the northern lights serving as a guide. There are some moments on this LP that are so damn powerful, its inexplicable. Especially the Austin Texas Mental Hospital series. Just stunning. This album will hold a special place in my heart forever. Thank you, Stars of the Lid.

Utterly amazing. Atmosphere taken to its utmost limits; a beautiful scenery described without words, without notes, without rhythm.

Made the mistake of listening to the ballasted orchestra first, and it really put me off sotl for a while. This album is light years ahead of that though. Fantastic!

Unlikely, but this is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.

Beautifully produced but its not dynamic, lacks a sense of story and not much interesting progression or experimentation. For me, it did not hold up to multiple listens.
