Supreme Clientele by Ghostface Killah

20 years. What a birthday. What an album. What an artist.

Few classics sound so fresh and so goddamn smooth after 20 trips round the sun.

Anyway, Iโ€™m listening to it now and itโ€™s great. And itโ€™s recommended. And yeah Iโ€™m curious what your thoughts on it are.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

Other notable Annuversaries. Musically speaking and specifically albums:

Nespithe by Demilich

This scary piece of work turns 26, as it was released 8 Feb 1994.

Started listening, too scary, couldnโ€™t finish. (How the fuck does he go so deep vocally?!?)

Also....

Marquee Moon by Television

This lesser known and not renowned at all album was released 8 Feb 1977. Math, being quite easy, indicates that it is ... uh... 43 today!

Congratulations for Supreme Clientele. ๐Ÿ‘

Even though I was not crazy about that album. Hell that album was one of of my more contentious reviews from this site. Not crazy about the beats and for Ghostface. Beats were easy to explain since they were quite rudimentary compared to other albums from that year like Stankonia or Like Water For Chocolate. To the the point where songs like Cherchez la ghost sounds like it is still in it's first draft like state or Stroke of Death where that track sounds god awful and is the big culprit of why musically this sounds eh to me. Now Ghostface himself, I will admit this is more of a personal thing but I can't explain why he doesn't resonate for me. And I will admit that needs an evaluation from me to see if this albu will grow or stay the same or get worse for me.

But still congrats.

On Behalf of me and the whole crew, thank you.

As for the production, I agree itโ€™s way more stripped down and less expansive than those albums. But the atmosphere of these songs usually hook me and put me straight in to that zone and the whole thing just flows from there. Peak RZA never was particularly adorned stylistically. And that is what I love about the production is itโ€™s skin and bones feel - I guess I just vibe with it. Or whatever.

As for Ghostface, heโ€™s not my fave rapper or even top 10. But on this album he seems so fucking charged-up, just overflowing with thousands of off-the-wall ideas. Itโ€™s the best kind of stream Oโ€™ consciousness stuff. The all over the place, energetic, humorous then sad then raucous etc etc style reminds me of other great album favorites in other genres like Bee Thousand or The Dreaming.

I respect that. I do believe that will need a revisit. Not now. Been chipping out 1997.

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel

so yeah this classic is exactly 22 years old now. Not a major anniversary, but I don't see any 20s or 25s or 50s of note. Still this is a great record. 19 year old me thought it may be the G.O.A.T.

Also this classic is 16 years old as it came out February 10th 2004... seems like just yesterday we all were obsessing over "Jesus Walks"

The College Dropout by Kanye West

Happy birthday, debut Kanye!

-------------------

The albums I will be listening to today to commemorate are:

Stained Class by Judas Priest

Which turns 42 today. Such a classic which I've never given enough tender loving care and attention to. Will rectify later.

Update: I am listening now and its kicking my ass. This is amazing! Maybe the heading should say "Stained Class is 42 Today!"

Oh and this is cool.

Final Fantasy VII Original Soundtrack by ๆคๆพ ไผธๅคซ [Nobuo Uematsu]

This 23 today. Great game, don't remember the soundtrack well. I'll do a nostalgia trip as well.

Okay that's your update. Have a great day, BEA.

DONE!

still listening now, and .... IM FUCKING FLOORED! This album is incredible! Itโ€™s heavy and also just razor sharp.

โ€œSaints in Hellโ€ is making me wanna walk aggressively down a street and glower and bump into strangers and then give them withering stares when they exclaim in protest. Not gonna do it, cuz Iโ€™m not a psycho, but I guess itโ€™s just making me feel like a badass mf.

Yay!!! ๐Ÿ˜

Yeah, for me, it's their second best album after Sad Wings Of Destiny. Sad Wings/Sin After Sin/Stained Glass was an unbelievable run and Priest's best incarnation. Their new one - Firepower - is dope too, but there was something epic & strange about those three 70s album that they never even tried to recapture.

Check out this...

Mind Freeze by Haunt

My favorite album of 2020 so far. It takes me back to being a teenager. lol

Oh sweet! Thanks for the recommendation, Tilly. Looks like a cool record and it may end up being my first 2020 album (I know I'm bad music fan) later today.

shhhh, come and gather round everyone. quiet now. *whisper* in a few moments Meat is Murder, Benji, and Mista Thug Isolation will be walking through that door. when they do I want everyone to go wild and turn the lights on and sing "Happy Birthday" okay? Okay, I think I hear them, shhhhh...

Through the door walks a 35 year old, and a couple kids aged 8 and 6 (a very very miserable yet wise 6 year old he is.)

The room explodes with cheer and song as the entirety of BEA belches out in dissonant voices the old familiar birthday song. Meat is Murder takes it well but underneath the foced smile is the faintest wince. Our wee lil 8-year-old Mista Thug Isolation is jumping off the wall with excited abandon. And then there's sweet, somber lil Benji, looking over the crowd and soaking in the faces, knowing full well they will all die.

Happy birthday!

Meat Is Murder by The Smiths
released Feb 11 1985

Mista Thug Isolation by Lil Ugly Mane
released 11 Feb 2012

Benji by Sun Kil Moon
Released 11 Feb 2014
