Hubris by Oren Ambarchi

Hard album to give a review to. It's neat for the most part, especially as an acoustic version of what a handful of progressive electronic albums are like, almost raga/americana-esque, transitioning into borderline freeform noise for the final ten minutes. Groove's dope, especially on the first track, but the juxtaposition between side A and side B's a little too much for me. Love the 'stop' ending though. Good on the guy though, sounds like it would've been fun to make. I dig it, but I think I'd return to it more if it was a 34-38 minute version of the first track.

To RoundTheBend: Madman Across the Water. Easy pick. First two tracks are my favourite by him. Unfortunately, a lot of the other releases on your list really aren't that great in my opinion. You might be in for some rough ones 🤣

Sorry for not responding in a couple of days. Had work and been enjoying some games. But back to this record. I do find this a great album. And if someone said this was an absolute favorite for the decade, I'd believe it. There were plenty of tracks that had me invested, or really was fascinated by the craft of bringing several samples and made a story around it. Though, it does make me question why am I not as ecstatic for this record? And keep in mind, grade wise while I would say this is in the middle of an 80 and an 85, I'd be more leaning to the latter. But back to the question, if I would make a hypothetical thought process it would probably having a more enveloping sound palette? Compared to The Avalanches two records or the very underrated Programmed To Love, those albums I would argue had tunes that felt more complete or aesthetically just fit in my usual music listening wheel house way more compared to this album. But I also can't say that this album isn't a waste of time. So my final thoughts for this album would be, if you are into plunderphonics and never listen to this, give this a listen. You might like it or be where I am and enjoy it. Or be really happy with this album. Decimal wise 8.3.

Hayden, listen to Wobbly. That is some intense plunderphonics.

The Nightfly by Donald Fagen

I used to think I disliked Steely Dan, but I heard Can't Buy a Thrill early last year and really liked it. I'm still not a fan of Aja, the only other Steely Dan album I've heard, so I wasn't sure what to expect here. First off: this might be the most misleading album cover I've seen since 20 Jazz Funk Greats. This looks like the cover of some vocal jazz album by a crooner in a smoky bar, not a polished pop rock album. Every song on this album starts off with a great hook that makes me think I'm going to like it, but most of them didn't do much memorable after that. The title track is the one exception - it has a great hook and was interesting from start to finish. The biggest thing that probably decides whether you like this album or not is the production, and I'm a bit undecided on it. On the one hand, it sounds great. On the other hand, as with Aja, it kind of takes the edge away from all of these songs. Which doesn't really matter since they're well-written anyway, but it makes the whole thing feel a bit sterile. A reviewer on RYM compared it to motel art: pleasant but inoffensive and unmemorable. I'll probably listen to this again, but I don't see it becoming a favorite (and it's not better than Can't Buy a Thrill). Lastly, this doesn't feel like a nighttime / nocturnal album to me. Is it supposed to? It feels like it based on the name and cover, but to me it sounds like something that would play in the middle of a fancy hotel lobby on a sunny day.

I accidentally deleted my review again, so instead of typing it out again, just know that this is a good experimental type album from Belgium that's off of a good record label called "Crammed Discs.

Babyblue, I do not like Dream Theater, so why don't you get em off of there.

Madman Across The Water by Elton John

My musical origins didn't have much room for Elton John. Not a fan of the genre's - but I can't deny his hits are worth listening to no matter musical origins/tastes. I think this is the third Elton John album I've heard and it's one of the better/more consistent ones, but I also just can't say it's a good album, so I give the middle rating with a 2.5/70. I think to be a true Elton John fan you have to be a combination of these things 1) From the era, or 2) if not from the era you love his lyricism, or 3) you like his hits (probably the majority of Elton John fans? - I've yet to meet a die hard Elton John fan - old or young, would love to so I could pick their brain). I do feel that while his albums are highly musical, they are vocal driven more so, and that's always a troublesome aesthetic for me.

And Hayden, your not wrong, I was joking earlier in the game that list is definitely wrong as I think a good chunk of these are albums I could totally not hear before I die. But I guess I'm a completionist? idk... I've been tempted to do other lists...

Amateur Doubles by Graham Lambkin

I know Graham Lambkin from his work with Jason Lescalleet, so I was excited for this release. Man, oh man, I am happy with this one. Tape Music, Sound Collage, Field Recording, Musique Concrete (whatever you want to call it) it's perfect for the zoning out that I like to do on occasion. The second track in particular was fantastic, and really transportative, and I could listen to itt for an hour if I needed to.

Seth, it's time to be a total dork and listen to Emerson, Lake, & Palmer.

Tarkus by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Wow. The first thirty seconds I was like, a dork... why would I be a dork and then about 5 minutes in I was like holy shit... how is it these types of artists takes something that started out with potential and then totally ruin it with something aesthetically terrible. Every damn track suffered from this - a mix of really good Tillamook Ice Cream, and then they were like oh yeah, well I'm 5 years old on a maturity scale, so lemme shit in that there tub of amazingly crafted ice cream. Whether that be a bad vocal or guitar solo or all of a sudden a 5 minute shit on your face or whatevs. It's like they can't do that from the beginning because they know if they did, you wouldn't be stupid enough to stick around. Sorry... this is often how I feel about a lot of metal and Prog. Then the badass ones do it from the beginning because they want to show how badass they suck! Sorry, ok tirade over. No offense - and yes there's good prog and metal and not all things are created equal and blah blah blah - the point I'm making is it's usually those two who put on the bigger shit shows than anyone else. The end. Still giving it a 2 (instead of a 1 or lower) though cuz they clearly good musicians and the such. Also I can't imagine Jimi Hendrix actually playing with these guys.

Worst possible lyric EVER:
Quote:
Can you believe, god makes you breathe. Why did he loose 6 million Jews.

I remember hearing a lot of people saying the 70s were just terrible musically, and then I look at my 70s chart and I'm like, I like the 70s thank you very much... apparently I lived a very sheltered life speaking of the 70s musically.

Petite Afrique by Somi
Loved this! The Alien track was kind of a weird half-cover of Englishman in New York, but I still liked it. Other songs vary from incredibly cool jazz loving and a bit structureless jams (structureless in a positive way!), to very well written R&B, blues and pop/electronic mashups. The first listen was a solid 9/10, but on the second listen an hour ago I was a bit less entertained, but it was still great. Although I am in a bad mood today, so that may be why. Either way it's incredible, give it a listen if you like most of these phrases: African music influences, R&B, pop, jazz, free, catchy, beautiful, electronic, fantastic voice, blues, modern but with the aesthetics of old, chill. 8.5/10

Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater

Tha1ChiefRocka wrote:
Babyblue, I do not like Dream Theater, so why don't you get em off of there.

Me neither - I gave their debut a 15/100 despite having a song, Pull Me Under, that I actually like. But I can't argue with the logic of getting them out of the way.

This wasn't a 15/100 bad, but I still didn't like it much. It's fairly engaging musically, but it's also ridden with cliches like the acoustic opening track and the spoken word interludes. I'm sure there's a story here but I didn't follow it and I'm not going to look it up because knowing the story won't impact my feelings on the album. The common criticism of this band seems to be that they sound sterile despite their technical prowess. I don't 100% agree with that, but I will say their songwriting isn't all that exciting. Despite being pretty complex it was still somehow strangely predictable*.

*The exception is the one part that kind of breaks down into a jazzy piano. It reminded me of the hoe-down portion of Between the Buried And Me's "Ants in the Sky" and I wonder if BtBaM got some inspiration from this when writing that song. "Ants in the Sky" is, as a whole, more unpredictable than anything on this album though.

Boris At Last: -Feedbacker- by Boris
I've never delved deeper into Boris discography despite loving both Pink and Flood. I've probably heard one or two more albums, but I can't remember which ones. It's probably because they have a scary, huge number of 25 studio albums. Anyways, this was a drone metal album by the band (drone metal is also one of those mostly unexplored territories for me), and even though it did remind me of Flood at parts, it's a completely different genre. Part 1 is a classic drone track, but then it starts to get more diverse with the post-rock influenced second part. Not that classic drone metal sounds bad, but it's interesting to hear a bit different take on the genre than the usual. Also, the solo in the middle of the second track sounds huge, love it. The ending of the second part and the third part have some vocals too, and they're more sludge oriented moments. Fourth track is the noisiest and most ear-piercing part - it's not the slow, heavy and crushing drone metal from the first track. It's a much richer and more chaotic brand of drone/noise, and there's a lot more high pitched noises towards the end too. The last part carries some of the same high pitched qualities of the fourth part, but with beautiful, soft post-rock background. It's quite a juxtaposition. The last minute and half is a very soothing instrumental that slowly moves away from loud parts and fades into silence. Maybe a bit too quick actually, but it's great nonetheless. All songs were excellent, but Parts 2 and 4 were probably my favourites. A brilliantly crafted record too. 8.5/10

A lot of pretty cool albums here. Queen II is the best Queen album, and Love Over Gold is the best Dire Straits album, but go with Art Blakey.
