Music From The Unrealized Film Script: Dusk At Cubist Castle by The Olivia Tremor Control
It's like the most psychedelic Beatles work was produced in the 90s, but even more psychedelic and experimental. There's some United States Of America and maybe even Os Mutantes and that Brasilian psychedelic tropicalia thrown in. I liked the songs and I liked most of the experimental sounds, but what I didn't like was the distribution. There was too much "empty space", if that makes sense. Of course the biggest wrongdoer is Green Typewriter. It's 10 songs with the same name which aren't really cohesive, and it's because of them that the whole second part of the album lacks any flow. The first Green Typewriter track is great though. 7.5/10
One of my faves!!! ๐

This starts off well with some really good, heavy hard rock. The first three tracks or so are even better than your average song by the group they most frequently get compared to (sorry LedZep). But unfortunately, the consistency isn't there. The album meanders over its 54-minute runtime and has too much filler. The songwriting can get pretty thin, which really gets exposed in the softer moments. The band is at its best when it provides a blast of hard rock energy, and enough songs do that to ensure that overall the album is pretty good. However, it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity. 3/5.

A pretty decent soul album, with a bit of variety musically throughout the album that I appreciated. Sugar Lee had a great vibe to it - it sounded like they were having fun on that song. Overall it was a nice soothing record that helped my Sunday morning hangover headache. Not much more to say as brain is not working properly right now. 7.5/10, and 30/36 for 1970.
Listen to Infected Baystate. Although I liked it, it was never a favourite of mine at the time, but over the years it kept growing on me and is now a top 5 all time album for me.
Now to have a look at 1980....there are some albums here I am sure I have heard before but that would have been over 30 years ago so I'm including them.

Black On Both Sides by Mos Def
Well said, this is a stone cold classic by the one and only Yasiin Bey, also known as Mos Def (although Black Star's debut is better ๐ ) Anyways, a bunch of great songs here including Fear Not Of Man, Hip Hop, Ms. Fat Booty, Speed Law, UMI Says, Rock N Roll, Know That, Brooklyn, Mr. Nigga, Mathematics and the rest of the album too let's be honest. That hardcore breakdown part in Rock N Roll never fails to give me a heart attack. The only fault is its length, at 71 minutes it's just too long for me to give it constant spins (that's why I don't have it rated yet). Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star is just a more compact and dense album. Goes harder too.
I am hip-hop
It's heavy metal for the black people
I am rock and roll
Been here forever
They just ain't let you know
Is this where the semantics of hip hop being the semi-equivalent of heavy metal comes from? I've yet to hear an older source on this, so might as well give it to my man Yasiin. A slim 8.5/10

Some heavy hitters and long time favourites there! Nice list. Go with Seventeen Seconds.

Lo-fi recorded Medieval music? It works. And the guy behind this project plays most of the period correct instruments along with his guitar. Pretty cool stuff.

In The Cure's second album there is no sign of the dark playfulness from before or the lighter playfulness that is still to come, and not much hint of their pop sensibilities they embraced later. It is all moody, gothic, post-punk and the album sets and maintains it's cold, dark atmosphere from the start. A good album as a whole listen, but hearing it now for the first time so many years later, A Forest is really the only essential song here.
As a bonus here are the ten The Cure albums I've ranked here, from highest to lowest.
1. The Head On The Door (one of the first albums I ever bought)
2. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (another purchase on it's release)
3. Disintegration (yep, this one too)
4. Wish (in my CD collection)
5. [Bestival] Live 2011) (I still bemoan when I had tickets to see them and I got seriously ill on the day and couldn't go - my son went instead and became an instant fan after it)
6. [Galore: The Singles 1987-1997] (also in my CD collection)
7. [Show] (got it)
8. Bloodflowers (...and I own this too)
9. Pornography
10. Seventeen Seconds
So how could Seventeen Seconds, today, compare against my favourites of theirs I've listened to for years. Still always good to hear another album of theirs, and I've still got more to look forward to. 7.5/10 and 19/32 for 1980.
2 & 1/2 hours? but I gotta go with Space Debris- Elephant Moon

21. Gaucho by Steely Dan
That's a really interesting ranking of The Cure, and a polar opposite of my rankings haha. Seventeen Seconds is in my top 5 for sure, it's atmospheric and filler free. Show and Paris are very underrated live albums, I always listen to them back to back, they go very well together, but I prefer Paris I think. Honestly they're a great live band, and were even better in the 80s/early 90s.

Another one from Chief's collection of fine noisy post-hardcore albums. It had the disadvantage of being played right after the new Chats album, which was a blast. I liked the more punk and hardcore songs, while the art punk part wasn't as striking, at least on the first listen. Runtime is 31 minutes, which is a plus since I'm in the mood for short, punchy albums today. Worth checking out if you've not heard it, and I'll return to it sometime. 7.5 or 8/10

Let's try Iron Maiden's debut, it's more punk and 70s rock than their later stuff, might be more interesting to you Purple.

I really enjoyed this album, and liked it about as much as the debut. It's an inventive and well-executed 80s pop record peppered with a handful of great tracks. My favorite on first listen was The Mercy Beat, and my least favorite was Out Of The Blue (Into The Fire). I can see this being a potential grower for me as well. 3.5/5.

German guys make jammy space and kraut rock for hours. If that's your kind of thing, then the album will probably be pretty good, if not, then you're in for a trip. I Imagine that this band is probably great live, but on a recording it lacks any sort of reall substance. Some tracks can get you into a trance, but most lose any of there ineresting ness after 5 minutes. Also, there's a lot of keyboards a la Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman, which can be a bit much.
More Than Any Other Day is great.

Yeah, this is some high-quality post-punk, with instrumental subtlety as well as lyrical depth. Also, I was only expecting music utilizing the classic post-punk emotional blend of depressive/angry/alienated, but the title(ish) track had me grinning from ear to ear. In retrospect, the cover was a clue. Very solid record throughout, with some highlights sprinkled in. 3.5/5.
