Adrenaline by Deftones
So I took a little break from music (not completely but it was like 1 album a day). Also went on a Deftones binge yesterday and today, as expected. This was 1 of 2 albums by them that I've not yet heard, the last one remains the s/t. There are many reasons why I love this band, but being among the nu metal pioneers is not one. Struggled for some time with Around the Fur, but I dig it a lot these days. I expected the same with Adrenaline, and... I was kind of wrong. It has clicked right away and is another one in a long history of good Deftones albums, but the style is not nearly peak Deftones. And by that I mean it's sonically their least interesting release by far. The songwriting more than makes up for it though, easily some of their best written and heaviest alternative metal songs. Chino's voice is the highlight in all of its raw glory, but Stephen Carpenter's riffs are also untouchable. Lifter might creep into my favourite Deftones songs list with a few more listens. May be my least favourite of their releases after Gore right now, but that's hardly a fault since I've just heard it for the first time and the others are all excellent. 8/10

As an exercise, here's my top 10 Deftones songs.

1. Passenger
2. Sextape
3. Romantic Dreams
4. Diamond Eyes
5. Hole in the Earth
6. Digital Bath
7. Mascara
8. You've Seen The Butcher
9. Knife Party
10. Ohms

HM: Rosemary, Felicitera, Hearts/Wires, Beauty School, Around The Fur

Somethin' Else by Cannonball Adderley

Another solid album. Really cool bop. The band is great. The work from Cannonball and Miles is so beautiful. I really liked it. Not sure what else to say - nothing here truly blew my mind. I did however find myself mesmerized by the playing and the melodies and the whole dynamic interplay of all the world class legendary musicians here.

@LedZep only one I heard there is still corners. Wasn’t like totally blown away by it. So I will instead nominate another album I had my eye in for some time...

Overpowered by Róisín Murphy

Luigii, I would agree with you that this isn't at the level of last year's Róisín Machine. The production is not as interesting and there aren't as many examples of great songwriting. However, this is still a very good, breezy pop album that is enjoyable from start to finish. Her vocals are strong and there are some catchy hooks. 3.5/5.

Temple IV by Roy Montgomery
This was quite the trip. It felt as much ambient/meditative as it did like any form of rock almost. I think it was just what I needed today. So thanks.

Yeah I enjoyed this a lot. If there were any complaints for this album, it would be how there are some songs to me sound like it is buried due to the production. Feels somewhat quiet compared to some of the more heavier moments of the album. And maybe you could trim down some tracks a bit. But there is a lot I do enjoy about it. For one it's at least different compared to what would appear during this year. Vocally I really enjoy it. And the band can make some killer jams. I also will mention that I do enjoy that they do take some risk. Grade wise this is a 90 but it is in that range of a Strong 8 to a light 9.

(2)
Damn, wanted to give Bay Shoso Strip. Also should have mentioned the word will with Roisin Murphy since I have a feeling I will enjoy the first two albums since both 2015's and 2016's albums were really intriguing. But yeah Roisin Machine just slaps from top to bottom. Anyway Bend listen to Sunshower.

Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea by PJ Harvey

Another PJ Harvey album, another very good listen that doesn't fully click. There are a couple great tracks here (the best probably being the opener) and plenty of songwriting, vocal, and instrumental talent. I guess the missing piece for me is more that her music isn't fully in my aesthetic wheelhouse than it is anything else. Anyway, this was quite enjoyable, and becomes the fourth Harvey album out of four I've heard to receive a 3.5/5.

Sound Ancestors by Madlib

This is lazily taken straight from my chart comment I just made:

“ (Efficient, beautiful and incredibly well produced instrumental hip hop album. Maybe it’s not generally my cuppa, but nonetheless it made me a fan for a few hours as I listened to this on repeat.)

Overall I found this to be a good, engaging and replayable instrumental hip hop album. Generally this genre is one I tend not to listen to. That might explain why this may be the highest profile release of the year so far amongst music nerds that I haven’t dived into. But based off my limited experience with the genre and the legend who is making this art, I can say that I really enjoyed the flow and artistry of this album.

The vocals and the spoken bits were all consistently well integrated into the song, the beats were never too loud or over the top but they did consistently create a nice sonic atmosphere. And the flow and length of the album was exactly what I wanted.

It also makes me wanna go back and listen to his back catalog of solo albums. I know he has some classics over the years. ”

So this and Heroes are the newest within my consumptions with Bowie's catalogue. And I will save my thoughts on Heroes when we get to that. So let's begin with Low. Coming after from Station To Station and a pretty turbulent life, Bowie decided to move from L.A. to Berlin. Which then begins the Berlin Trilogy. And Low is pretty excellent. I could envision listeners during that time being blind sighted by this album with how his glam rock career and his dabble in soul with Young Americans and then goes into a more abstract electronic direction. And I would say the revisit did help me get it a little more. Because, while my enjoyment is pretty high, I can't say it is an absolute favorite. And that comes from the first half where I see it a bit of a double edge sword. Where song wise are pretty intricate and odd with there sounds, look at a song like What in the World with it's blubbering synth tone or the opener, I wished these songs had more of a progression to have the songs to be a bit more thrilling for me. But in a weird way, I sort of understand why it is like that. It feels a bit of a calm down from that turbulence of his diet of coke milk and peppers so Bowie decided to keep on the down low. But, its not like he wasn't gonna shake it up. Also there is something that the first half has this mentality that video game composers have. And this is without mentioning about the second half. The highlights being Warswaza, Weeping Wall and Subterraneans. Warswaza having that warm embrace that just hits the soul similar to new age acts that would come during the late 70's and Subterrraneans which oddly feels somewhat Blade Runner Blues before that became a thing in the early 80's. And while I don't hold this as a masterpiece, it is important for upcoming acts in the late 70's and would be a puzzle piece for post rock and post punk. Grade wise:90 Was able to solidify into a light 9.
P.S. Hopefully I have more to say with Heroes.

Walk On by Boston

It sounds like a Boston album, but with a slightly updated recording process. It bears very little to no hallmarks of any 90s influence, and it also lacks Brad Delp on vocals. I still love that debut album though. Surely weird to listen to this album from 1994 that feels vaguely familiar to their sound, but has almost no connection with me as the listener.

As much as I want to nominate the great '77 selection, let's finish those '93 albums first. Go with the Duran Duran.

Soft Machine- Land Of Cockayne
Supertramp- Free As A Bird
Joni Mitchell- Dog Eat Dog
Blue Oyster Cult- Club Ninja
Grand Funk- What's Funk
Moody Blues- Keys To The Kingdom
John Paul Jones- The Thunderthief
Misfits- The Devil's Rain
Failure- The Heart Is A Monster
Modest Mouse- Strangers To Ourselves

The Thule Grimoires by The Ruins Of Beverast
Ruins of Beverast (Alexander von Meilenwald's impressive solo project) returns with a pretty dark doom/goth/atmoblack style. Pulls no punches, it's intentionally overtly long (or at least I have a feeling it is). Slightly lofi too, but not nearly as much as 2009's Rain Upon The Impure, which is the other RoB album I've heard. It's noticabely psychedelic and hazy, which is also a major difference compared to the suffocating mid-tempo riffs and the funeral doom aesthetic of the 2009 effort. To put it plainly, while it's arguably more unique, it isn't as punishingly heavy, it doesn't rock as hard, and that includes the songwriting too. Rain Upon the Impure is great front to back with the title track being a strong highlight, while there are sections here that drag on a bit. Almost anthemic clean vocals at parts fit very well though, for example on the halfway point of The Tundra Shines, it's the closest thing to a "catchy" part I've heard in Mr. Von Meilenwald's music. I certainly did enjoy this a lot, but both of his albums I've heard are very long, test your patience and are all around not easy listens. Very rewarding though. Low 8/10 I guess, that would make RUTI a very high 8/10

Land Of Cockayne is arguably the worst album title here, so go with that one
