Deltron 3030 by Deltron 3030

A fairly solid hip hop album. Cool concept, and I liked the slightly nerdy rhymes. The production and beats were enjoyable but it the whole thing just didn't blow me away like a top 20 album of the year should...but I'm sure that's more about me than the album. It's still one of the highest ranked and rated hip hop albums for the year for me. What I did really enjoy though was the added bonus remixes on the spotify version. 7.5/10, and 28/45 for 1993.

Modest Mouse Rocka...I found it a much better album than people think it is.

An Unexpected Reality by Gatecreeper
Eh I've heard some Gatecreeper songs before, and they were hyped up by Kerrang (idk why I'm still subbed to their FB page) so I expected to not like it much. However this EP is also hailed by some people in the metal community as a major gamechanger for the band which... I kinda see, but the new style is just as meh as their previous one. They were Entombed worship with some metalcore elements, now they're a mix of death metal and crust punk. And all of these styles were done much better by some other bands. Except the last track, Emptiness. That one was more in a death doom style and I dug it more than any other song I've heard from the band. The juxtaposition between the first 7 tracks which run 1 minute each and Emptiness which is 11 minutes and a completely different style is pretty interesting. It's a solid track and it makes up the majority of the 17 minute EP, but I was still slightly underwhelmed overall. 6.5/10

Really? Haven't read into the band but that's quite interesting. I know about C86 origins of twee pop but idk about the chronology after that. Never would've guessed that his vocals were influential, and honestly no male twee pop vocalist I've heard sounds like Calvin (Belle and Sebastian, The Go-Betweens, The Verlaines...) Although I've heard only like 20-30 twee pop albums and a lot of them are proto-twee from the 80s and early 90s, so that may be it. It really is altering my perception on twee pop, thanks for the clarification Bay!

Sorry I went to edit then copy this over, then I went ahead and saved the edit and now this post is lost. It was a review of The Plugs I met 2 by me.

It was my recommendation of Charlie Morrow album to someone who had America Lament by Charlie Morrow on their post. And then it had my list of 10 2021 albums.

This was good. While there were some standout moments like No Sense, Far Behind, Arrow and Rain that were quite interesting to me, I wouldn't say this was an absolute favorite for me. Like I not really crazy with the mid pace tracks. I feel like they work but they don't necessarily excite me. As well as compared to other alt rock acts of the time, this doesn't have the gruff of other acts. Hell, if you said this was released in the early 2000's I might have believed you. Otherwise a good album but I feel you could do better. Grade:75

America Lament by Charlie Morrow
Just about the hardest to shoehorn into a genre (or even list of genres) release I've heard whole year. Experimental, sound collage, drone, avant garde jazz, folk, ambient, contemporary classical (in the broadest sense) etc. He's definitely an innovative composer. This is an archival release, but I've not found the original recording date. His other work is from the late 70s and 80s, and if this is anywhere close to that then it might be one of the more forward-thinking releases of its time. I'm sure this would interest a lot of BEA lovers of obscure and unique gems and I'm happy that I can wholeheartedly recommend this one.

A lot of those 77' albums tempt me, so you'll take a brief break from 93'. Go with the best Pink Floyd album (and that's non-negotiable!)

Timely!! by Anri

I think this is the best city pop album I've heard so far (very small sample size of 3). Quite fun, extremely 80s, and pleasantly hook-laden. Her vocals are very good, and I was surprised by how many English lyrics are blended into the predominantly Japanese songwriting. The one sticking point for me is the production. While many songs sound really nice, others adopt some of the worst excesses of the era/genre. I don't know if this makes sense, but at times the production almost sounds... chunky? Even though the cheese can bring things down, this is still well worth a listen. 3.5/5.

Yup! I don't know how influential his vocals were (after all, not many work in that register), but they are some of the most iconic vocals associated with the genre. In addition to being a cornerstone of Beat Happening, he has multiple guest spots with Heavenly, one of the other most important twee groups.

Strangers To Ourselves by Modest Mouse

Oh, I hate to put "Shit In The Cut" of Isaac Brock and Modest Mouse, but this album is just as boring and uninspired as the first time I had tried to listen to it back when it came out. Production leaves a lot to be desired, and it lacks much of the fire that used to make the band a delight to listen to. Still there are a few shades of something good here and there. It's not like they've lost all of their songwriting ability. "Pistol" is a bizarre attempt at something other than their typical sound that unfortunately doesn't succeed. I wish it had. Even songs with a harder edge like "Ground Walks" sound weak in comparison to what they were capable of on previous releases. Straight up Pop attempts like "Ansel" and "Wicked Campaign" are even more difficult to get through.

That album title could not be more ironic.

BAYSTATE, I can finally rec Candy Claws to you. The bizarre way that RYM orders stuff has their album with 900 reviews above the album with nearly 8,000 (?)

There's so many great albums on that chart, but I've really been digging Ceres & Calypso lately. I missed it when it first came out in 2013, but the last year or so, it's turned into a favorite from that stacked year.

Supertramp- Free As A Bird
Joni Mitchell- Dog Eat Dog
Blue Oyster Cult- Club Ninja
Grand Funk- What's Funk
Moody Blues- Keys To The Kingdom
John Paul Jones- The Thunderthief
Misfits- The Devil's Rain

Voodoo by D'Angelo

Gee, I wonder who this reminds me of? ๐Ÿ™„ Sure, the vocals are great, but musically there wasn't much going on that interested me apart from a rare few moments here and there. Very laid back and chilled, and I'm sure this would have been a great album for romancing and seducing, but those days are thirty years behind me. Each song felt like it went on for too long, and the album dragged so it felt even longer than it's already long run time. Untitled (How Does It Feel) was great though. A shining light of excitement. The rest: not for me. I liked Black Messiah a lot though ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ 6/10, and 45/46 for 2000.
