I actually listened to this when it first came out and didn't think much of it. I'm a complete idiot and didn't even realize In Bloom was a cover... like literally didn't my first listen. Such a unique take on the song and lyrics are one of the last thing I pay attention to. This time around I catch the iconic lyric and am like oh ok. hehe. Anyway, that doesn't matter as the whole album did go a notch up in my mind. Lots of great arrangements and songwriting. Definitely a good album, even if it's not my personal favorite jam.

Another artist I knew nothing about it before pressing play, and the first track just blew me away. Some funky jazzy electronic music that was highly entertaining, and quite a unique combo for me, as I don't listen to a lot of electronic music. The next two tracks were nearly as exciting and I was really enjoying the listening experience. After that it all went a bit downhill for me, as the jazz influences felt less and the IDM took over more. There was still quite a bit of interesting things going on, but I couldn't help but be a bit disappointed after those great first few tracks. 7/10, and 41/55 for 2000.
I've only heard two of those RTB. One is nice enough but nothing special (The Jayhawks), and the other one it's the lyrics that stand out for me so it feels a bit pointless giving it to you (The Mountain Goats). So I am going with an album I've wanted to hear for a long time - Big Star

Gowi has a knack of finding deep cut/alternate best albums of artists I typically don't like and finding the parts of that artist which actually open me up to considering them as "good". Reminds me of the Kraftwerk conversation earlier. Like the opening track seemed more interesting than anything on #1 or 3rd to me. But it didn't stop there, piano, vocals, guitar work on this is definitely worth the listen. I still don't love Big Star, but I am no longer scratching my head why people love them.
2. I feel like I've seen that Rated R on your list in a few different iterations (or maybe that was someone else), anyway, it's my favorite record of theirs. Fingers crossed you like too :). Also thanks for filtering out/choosing that album for me, perhaps well chose given your critique.

Easily one of the best albums I've heard the whole year. Ambient and folky, mesmerising and ominous. Reminds me a bit of Coil's Music to Play in the Dark as well as Dead Can Dance, both of which are personal favourites so it's a very generous but also apt comparison. No wonder this was a rec in that 2021 thread, once again BEA has proven to be the best resource for new music 😁 I've heard it only once (been a bit busy lately), but with another listen it could crack the top 5 of the year with potential to be even higher. 8.5/10

I should love this. It has a lot of the elements I love about Nirvana. But somehow it just misses the pale for me. Interestingly enough I didn't feel this way about their record Down. I didn't like that one even more. So this is a step up for sure. It also has some elements of Modest Mouse I like... idk... scratching my head and not understanding why I didn't love this. Bass tone is killer too. I feel like I'd need to be in a mood for this... like deep into this style and world for a while. Perhaps I'm sticking my head into this world at the wrong time... dunno. Borderline not getting the 3.5 it totally deserves.
2. Yeah that Deep England record is quite interesting. There's clearly a lot of ties to Early Music and pushed some buttons for me for sure. Not familiar with any of the others and anyone who spells stuff like this is kooohl: th1rt3en

You're right RTB, Pharoahe Monch is really cool. Not because of this cheesy name though. Although the name is apparently a reference to 12 apostles, with Monch proclaiming himself the 13th. The backing band of Marcus Machado (guitar) and Daru Jones (drums) and him are doing a rap rock version of hardcore east coast stuff. Very political and I think the rock edge gives the music more tension. That being said it's not nearly the best in terms of songwriting, and apart from great guitar work I kept thinking it could've been a much better album if it was 2001 instead of 2021. Pharaohe can still rap, it wouldn't be fair to say that he's a shadow of his former self, but he's certainly not one of the best MCs in the game anymore. These lines were great though:

A slight let down in terms of songwriting, I expected a way better album 'cause it got a very positive review from Myke C Town (that's where I've heard of it). Plus the opener was punchy and possibly the best song. The idea to pair Monch with a rock band has potential, the execution is only decent. 7/10

One of my friends irl said they considered Arctic Monkeys to be the defining band of the '10s, which baffled me even though I hadn't listened to any of their '10s albums at the time. Well, now I have, and I'm not any less baffled. AM is the third record I've heard by this popular band, all through the canon game. And although AM has a different sound that jettisons many of the garage rock / post-punk elements of their earlier work, my opinion of it is more or less the same. One point of reference I hear at times is The Black Keys, which is not a bad direction to pursue. I really like The Black Keys, but when Arctic Monkeys try on that sound, they are much less rootsy. For the most part though, this is straight ahead indie rock, perhaps what might be called "landfill indie." The instrumentation, vocals, and songs are fairly solid and pretty enjoyable throughout. But while this is a nice listen that goes down easy, there aren't many highlights. 3/5.

Psychedelic and noisy 90s indie. The best indie. Didn't even matter it was all in Spanish. Sometimes I get the urge to learn Spanish/Portuguese so I can understand south American, Spanish and Portuguese classics (at least I think the languages are similar enough to understand both if you know one). Imagine I'd enjoy that Chico Buarque album even more. Back to Los Planetas. It was noisy and bordering on shoegaze a lot, but the vocals, which weren't bad but weren't the highlight either, prevented it from being a full blown shoegaze album. It's almost an hour long but it was remarkably consistent and enjoyable throughout. Sometimes the songs sounded so similar that I didn't even notice the transitions. In general, the more psychedelic and weird it got, the better. Like the outro of Desaparecer, which was great. 8/10

This is quite a nice record, and one that stacks up well to Liege & Lief. Mellow British folk rock with beautiful vocals from Sandy Denny. On the downside, the song selection could be improved, and the jamming in A Sailor's Life isn't interesting enough to sustain it for over 11 minutes. On the upside, Who Knows Where The Time Goes (stone cold classic) and Percy's Song are an especially gorgeous one-two punch that establishes the b-side as superior. 3.5/5.
