Funny Girl by The Original Broadway Cast
So to start off, I'm not a big fan of Broadway in general. There are a few things that are very present in almost all Broadway musicals which make me dislike them more than other types of musicals. 1) I've mentioned this before but it bothers me when musicals have "filler" songs, or songs that just exist for the musical number without advancing the plot at all. Even GREAT musicals like West Side Story and Sound of Music have this, and usually I can excuse it when the song is good, but Funny Girl has a few crummy songs that serve no purpose other than to fill time. 2) Specific to American/Broadway musicals, for some reason the desired timbre of voice is one of a very grating, nasal voice. Interestingly enough, this type of voice is sort of what Barbara Streisand is known for, but on this album her voice is actually not so grating and doesn't get on my nerves. It's just literally every other female voice and some of the male voices that get to me.
With that said, I think this is sort of a comedic musical in addition to being biographical, and it sort of fails in the comic aspect. I've read reviews about this musical from others who find it truly funny, and that just fell flat for me. I guess different tastes some 60 years apart, and then there's also the very antiquated "stand by your man" sentimentality despite the man being a total douchebag through-and-through.
There's a few iconic tunes in this musical, but they pale in comparison to other musicals of the era like Hello, Dolly!, Fiddler on the Roof, or the Man of La Mancha for example. "People" and "I'm the Greatest Star" are fine, but I really don't like the most popular "Don't Rain on My Parade".
I didn't think I was going to like this musical album, and I ended up disliking it for different reasons than I anticipated. Streisand is actually great, as is the big band overture, but everything else about this musical is not so great. 2/5

Yeah I agree this isnโt a classic and not nearly as brilliant as Atrocity Exhibition. But itโs good. Danny Brown is such a unique artist, his voice and delivery is so damn weird and at first quite grating. But once I โgot itโ on his classic 2016 release I found it awesome. He writes some seriously dark and hopeless and brilliant lines here. Some of the more raunchy shit got on my nerves. Eating Pusey is cool. But after 2 minutes of hearing about it I was ready to move on and preferably back to some of the heavier material that the album starts with masterfully and then returns to throughout the record.
The beats and production is minimal and not what I thought it may be based off Old and Atrocity Exhibition, but there were some really cool and even some really haunting beats in this album.
Krauss is great and who knows maybe the title of this album will be prophetic for you. ๐

I have 400 or so albums to hear on it and what I will do is Pick ONE album from each page of 40 albums (the last page will be more like 50 albums...) and I will pick one album off the list that I am most intrigued by or most interested in hearing again for more thorough evaluation or reminding. Still excluding any sort of soundtrack or classical music ( so the rank is in a list of all LPs and Mixtapes excluding live, archival, western classical and any sort of soundtrack/score.)
1. Abraxas by Santana/1970/RYM #382 all time album (Classic and I have heard this and his other early maybe first 3 albums before but its been a long time. As a kid I adored looking at the vinyl copy of this that my dad had for obvious reasons. Still do. But now maybe I can look past the cover even more and bask in the glory of this music.)
2. Hvis lyset tar oss by Burzum/1994/RYM #466 all time album (I have heard this several times. But itโs been awhile and I feel like I never have it half the attention I gave Filosofem. Atmospheric Black Metal)
3. Juju by Siouxsie and The Banshees/1981/RYM #506 all time album (a highly regarded gothic post punk album that Iโve never heard. Interesting, very interesting.)
4. A I A: Alien Observer by Grouper/2011/ RYM #633 all time album (as an indication of how out of touch with Grouper I have been, I was shocked to see this is right there with Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill as her most loved album ever. I honestly haven't checked out any of her music in close to a decade. Really intrigued to dip my toes back into the indescribable and unclassifiable brilliance of Grouper.)
5. Pierced From Within by Suffocation/1995/ RYM #662 all time album (I guess it is clear I have interest in expanding my knowledge and experience with death metal. Well, its true. And this is a cool looking and i hear a very intense death metal classic.

Pop 2 by Charli XCX/2017/RYM #741 all time album (Due in large part to my over-reliance on RYM album charts for listening queues and my tendency until recently of forgetting to include Mixtapes, this Charli album has never really been fully listened to, at least not as much as it deserves. I have heard parts and bits. I adore her last 2 LPs and whenever I would expand her RYM page I would not look lower on the page at the Mixtape section to see this. Anyway, that over-explanation aside, this is a cool pop album I hear and still widely regarded as her best project? we shall see.)
7. Leaving Your Body Map by maudlin of the Well/2001/RYM #797 all time album (interesting looking avant-garde metal. will listen to Bath released same day as well probably. I have found an excuse to include this on every single list of potential picks. surely, its time will come.)
8. Days of Future Passed by The Moody Blues With The London Festival Orchestra/1967/RYM #808 all time album (Super classic album that I have been avoiding for decades for some reason. I have always associated The Moody Blues with my mother and father since I was a kid and they'd play their greatest hits and constantly go on and on about how cool they were. But I think I am now mature enough to listen to my parents lol.)
9. Tri Repetae by Autechre/1995/RYM #907 all time album (Okay, I had Confield on this list briefly, then removed it. Now I see this, Confield and LP5 are the highest rated of Autechre, so yeah I resubmit this IDM Glitchy classic as my page 9 nomination.)
10. Unhalfbricking by Fairport Convention/1969/RYM #981 all time album (Okay, so I will for sure be listening to their other TWO 1969 albums as well, at the very least Liege and Lief. But yeah these are albums and an artist that I have heard but for some reason and for various random chance moments I've yet to really sit down and just listen to these classics. These folk albums seem right up my alley as much a s it is possible to be. So yeah, this is a special limited time 3 for one deal.) _________________ -Ryan
This is actually the first nu metal album I've ever heard and only the third rap rock album (Blakroc and Yelawolf's Love Story, didn't like either). The album I've heard that it sounds most similar to is Rage Against The Machine, which I awarded a 2/5 early in this game. Anyway, after hearing Hybrid Theory I can definitely understand why it sold so many copies and why so many people enjoy it, but I think it's just not for me. I don't like the vocals, lyrics, or songwriting, and I think the rapping is wack. Instrumentally, it has some redeeming qualities. The integration of electronics and turntablism into metal on this record is interesting. The heavy guitars are also nice, but unfortunately they're arranged in predictable and repetitive ways. As a complete package, this debut from Linkin Park is pretty bad imo. 2/5.

Oh yeah...I've been wanting to hear this for a while but rightly or wrongly not being available on streaming services does impact on how and what I listen to. This album is proof that I need to work on that. This is what I want from my hip hop. Some catchy enough beats, interesting and experimentalish sounds, lyrics that say something worth listening too while also being intensely personal, with emotional and passionate delivery, thematically consistent, no filler and a lack of unnecessary skits and/or interludes. The industrial vibe helps too for my music tastes. My only (minor) complaint is the brevity, both of some of the individual songs and the album as a whole, although that's definitely preferable over the all too common bloated hip hop albums. But I temporarily fixed that by just pressing play again immediately after the album finished ๐ . If this was available on streaming a couple of these songs (for now Into The Void and Black Magic, maybe more later) would be getting added to my listening playlists. Great stuff! This should be in the top 100 for the year, and it's going in mine at #14. 8.5/10

Dawn Of Possession by Immolation
Heavy, HEAVY death metal. Love it. Some of the best old school riffs I've heard as well. In a time where the death metal genre had a handful of great bands and a lot of replicas (some of which still made good music), Immolation stands out from the crowd. Riffs are incredible, leads twisted, not simple and not too complex, but unique in their own way. You'll recognise Robert Vigna's playing instantly in a crowd of OSDM players. There's a slightly progressive edge too with a lot of tempo and rhythm changes. That's not all, what the hell is that half dungeon synth riff doing in the intro to Those Left Behind? Genius. At its core this is still a straightforward New York death metal album, albeit extremely well made and I guess that's what I love the most about Dawn of Possession. I'm not sure about highlights as of yet, I'm sure after a few more listens I'll be able to dissect the album better, but for now the whole thing's incredible, maybe even more so than Close to a World Below. And to think that I've never heard an Immolation album prior to this game... High 8.5/10

Glad that you liked God Has Nothing To Do With It... I'd recommend the follow up too even though it's quite different and divides opinions. Much more haunting, less bangers, more industrial and experimental stuff. Go with Oneohtrix Point Never's almost synthpop effort next.

This was cool. I donโt know if hat it is about charliโs voice but I love it. Itโs just strangely beautiful the way she lays effects on her voice and sings these emotional, maximalistic pop songs. I really love that. Not a fan of some of the features but whenever I like the artist as much as I do I find it annoying listening to others almost regardless of who or how good. Maybe that is why I like last years album the most of hers. It felt the most wholly hers. Still most of these tracks are great. I will say sometimes on the more noisy and grating bits and in the more over the top loud parts I was out off a little. I know that that is what makes her so unique. But I guess I just prefer the slightly lower scale pop sounds here.
I think that I rank the 3 LPs Iโve heard of hers 1. How Iโm Feeling Now, 2. Charli, 3. Pop 2. But all are excellent. Easily one of my fave pop musicians today. Maybe only Rina Sawayama challenges her for that number 1 spot.

Ever since White Iverson blew up, I've always been irritated by Post Malone as a musician and person for a variety of reasons, so I've never sought out a project of his. But I tried to set aside my predispositions to listen to this. Let's start with some positives. This album is a smooth, well-sequenced listen that goes down very easy. It doesn't feel any longer than its 51-minute length, which is not something I was expecting. It's easy to see why this was a smash. It has a number of catchy radio hits to juice the numbers, but it also flows well enough that a ton of people must put this on in the background for the vibe. I'm not a fan of his rapping, but Malone is a solid singer and he's accompanied by an all-star cast of guests that elevate their tracks. Hollywood's Bleeding mostly stays within the lane of pop-trap, but there's a fair amount of stylistic diversity with forays into pure pop, r&b, and rock. Now for negatives. It's really all about the songwriting and lyrics. They're fairly consistently mediocre and cliche. The best track is probably Sunflower, which is solid. But from the big hits to the deep cuts, it's nearly all empty and hackneyed - never offensively bad, but these songs are just kind of... there. They're certainly songs. This is an okay album, and I wouldn't be displeased if someone put it on. It's just not something I'll seek out in the future. 2.5/5.

Very cool, very 1967, very dignified and very beautiful. Lovingly arranged, thought-provoking more so than I anticipated. I had no idea this was a a concept album and an album that basically walks you through a typical day from dawn to night. It is very beautifully orchestrated and maybe the most respectful and respectable mic of rock and classical I've heard. Sometimes such a marriage can sound cheap, like the music doesn't match and it becomes clear why they are almost never seen in the same room together - but here they meld quite beautifully with very few moments when I am taken out of it so to speak when the rock comes in or the classical comes in. It works on every track. The highlights being for me the only song I was familiar with pre-this listen "Nights In White Satin" which is always awesome to hear and it is amazing hearing it finally in the album's context and as a closer to a day. Also the fun Afternoon, which is very twee and bouncy and joyous at times and very nostalgic and sad at others. Love the orchestral start to the album, which was long enough to be a good introduction to sound of the album and kind of told me that this was indeed not going to be a very pop rock-y album.
All in all, it was a great and beautiful listening experience. Super happy I finally got my head out of my ass and listened to it.

Will probably relisten to Lady Soul which is ranked slightly higher even than this as well when this is picked. Who knows maybe I will go on an Aretha tear!
