Well! Here I would like to start with my own long term project taking advantage of the best BEA has to offer: overall charts from people who are as interested in music as I am. I already have year charts which are based on the albums I already own or know, but there are a lot of them which I haven't listened to yet and which might be worth discovering. I'd like to do this by going through the overall BEA top lists per year starting in 1963 which is both my year of birth and the year in which I personally think rock music started to become interesting. To keep it a bit varied I will skip through the years in five year periods, ie starting in 1963 then 1968 then 1973 all the way to 2013 and then back to 1964 and so on. Every year I will start with some stats of my personal chart in comparison to the overall year charts, both top 20 an top 50 and will start to listen to at least the top 20 albums I don't know and I'll hope to give some comments sometimes very short, sometimes a bit longer. I will also update my personal year charts accordingly. In principle I will use Apple Music to listen to the albums, which I suppose will cover most of the field. If a certain album isn't present in Apple Music, I'll have to skip it. I will try to listen to all the albums at least once and sometimes twice if I doubt, but I'll skip the really stupid ones (ex a Xmas compilation in 1963) and also other compilations, classical music, jazz and easy listening. This will be a long term project which means there might be times in which I will stop a bit of course because I don't want be stuck listining to albums of the same year all the time. However I suppose this will take at least a month per year. I will try to keep it up but please don't be mad if I give up (maybe already after the first year :lol: )

Intolerance by Grant Hart
That song is in fact the Reprise, a sort of freak out of the main themes of the album, not bad but nothing special either.
I'm maybe more a fan of Bob Mould but it was clear he and Grant Hart were the perfect pair (not relationwise) of Hüsker Dü. And he made some great solo albums of which this one is clearly one. The Main, All Of My Senses and 25/41 are all infectious top/pop songs and also the rest of the album is very good. The album rises from the 12th to the 11th rank of the year.

And an album on my wishlist:

Automatic by The Jesus And Mary Chain
In fact I'm a fan of the post-Psychocandy Jesus and Mary Chain. What they lost in fuzzyness they gained in good rock songs without losing their grit. The highlight is Head On which was later covered by The Pixies. And the album enters my 1989 year chart at the 19th rank.

Parole D'amore Scritte A Macchina by Paolo Conte
And the track in question is Il Maestro I haven't listened to since 20 July 2007, indeed not really the best track on the album. Although there is not really an outlier like Max or Gli Impermiabile, this is one of his most consistent albums. Paolo Conte is about the only Italian artist I like but that's just because his music is both very universal and very unique with his smoky voice and the use of instruments which I normally don't like like the accordion but used here in the greatest manner. Happy Feet is one of the highlights and the albuù moves up from the 55th to the 51st rank.

This Is Our Music by Galaxie 500
This is one of those bonds I've grown to love. The first references that come to mind are the Velvet Underground and shoegaze but they do their own thing with it, especially also on this album. And I suppose everyone can agree that Listen, The Snow Is Falling is the best track here. The album enters at the 25th rank of the year.

the one I haven't listened to in a long time is Fade Away (not listened to since 18 August 2007) which is in fact not bad.
Honest by Dave Stewart And The Spiritual Cowboys
Not as good as the first self-titled album but this one is still enjoyable with as the absolute highlight Cat With A Tale. Goes from the 74th to the 57th rank in my 1991 year chart.

Honey Steel's Gold by Ed Kuepper
Ed Kuepper is one of my personal heroes especially because of his work in The Saints and The Aints (check out this last band) but his solo work is not bad either. Not very special (with the song I already know The Way I Made You Feel as the highlight) but good and it immediately enters at the 56th rank.

Spooky by Lush
And track would be Stray which I haven't heard since 24 May 2010 which is in fact a very good introduction to the album.
I discovered this album at the time it was released an immediately fell in love with it. I loved the singing and the songs were in my opinion top class. And the sound was both spooky and lush (hihi). All tracks here are great but my favorite is Untogether.
I know that many people prefer Gala (a compilation of their earlier EP's) or even Split but this the album I discovered them with and I still think this is one of the albums that made the already great year 1992 and I even think this might be my favorite shoegaze album.
And then to discover that the album was way too low in my 1992 ranking at 31. So something had to be done with that and it was immediately promoted to the 13th rank.

Doppelgänger by Curve
Also a shoegaze album with also a special role for the singer. Toni Halliday seems to have really inspired Shirley Manson but where Garbage's sound was more rock/pop orientated, this is more shoegaze but to me fairly average shoegaze. Not to say that this is a bad album but there were many better bands at the time (like Lush). But still good for the 56th rank of the year.

New West Motel by The Walkabouts
And that track is Break It Down Gently I haven't heard since 1 August 2007. in fact a very fine track I had underrated by a mile.
This is the hardest rocking album of the Walkabouts and also my favorite. It's got some really fine guitar playing and the interplay between the male and female singer is great. There is definitely a hint of country in their music but that doesn't do the album any harm. The highlights are numerous with especially a killer opening trio starting with the great Jack Candy. Again of those album I really needed to upgrade after a long period not listening to it: it rises from the 54th to the 24th rank of the year.

And an album on my wishlist:
Never heard of the guy but the music is a mixture between The Kinks and XTC so you can't really go wrong. The album enters at the 54th rank.

Vitalogy by Pearl Jam
with Bugs a track I haven't listened to since 28 August 2007 and it's indeed a bit of a filler on this otherwise good but not great album. Many people like this album because of its slows like Nothingman and Better Man but these are to me not the highlights. The very punky and fast Spin The Black Circle is the one for me and is absolutely breathtaking. All in all a good album with one highlight and the album climbs from the 55th to the 38th rank.

Loved by Cranes
I recently got into this band and upto now I like their albums and also this one. They are essentially a shoegaze band but the sound of the band is made by the very etheral vocals of Alison Shaw which I like very much. And they do succeed in sounding edgy when they want to so all in all a good album which lands at the 44th rank.

University by Throwing Muses
And the title track is also the song I haven't heard since a very long time, ie since 16 December 2007 and it is indeed to be regarded as filler. But the rest of the album is just fine with Bright Yellow Gun and Shimmer as the highlights. The Real Ramona was my introduction to the band but this was a good second in which Kristin Hersch, an artist I've been following through her whole career, had the room for herself and did a good job at it. The album increases from the 68th to the 28th rank.

The Edges Of Twilight by The Tea Party
My Tea Party album has always been Transmission which is very industrial. On this album the band shows a much larger range. The middle Eastern atmosphere reigns on every of their records but here the band also smuggles in some bluesy elements which makes them sound like Led Zeppelin. But they do too much their own thing to be compared with other bands and this is again a great album of theirs which enters at the 42nd rank.

Broken Arrow by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
With Baby, What You Want Me To Do as the track I haven't listened to since 27 August 2007, the ending track that I will come back to.
To me this album is one of NY's most underrated album. People always say that the production is terrible (of course the last long track which is also a live tracks is the best example), but to me this only adds up to the atmosphere of this little gem. It starts off with three very long tracks which are at the same time very guitar based but also not really hard rocking. But to me they are the essence and the highlights of the album and yes, maybe they could have been spread out across the album a bit more but it just remains a great opening trio. The rest of the album is not bad and ends with that very long and bluesy track at the end which many people hate so much. I don't hate it: I just like it, nothing more.
An the conclusion is that this album moves up from the 60th to the 15th rank of the year.

Magician Among The Spirits by The Church
The title of the album refers to a book by Houdini and is indeed much more spiritual than other Church albums. Their career was at a bit of a dead end so the least thing they seemed to be interested in was to make another hit album so there's not even a hint of hit here. The album is very moody and sometimes there are heavy references to Pink Floyd. The best track to me is the very long and ubermoody title track which just has this very trance-y vibe I really like. Not all tracks are ace but nevertheless a very good one and is a good diversion from their "hit" albums. It ends up at the 53rd rank of the year.

Bridges To Babylon by The Rolling Stones
with Might As Well Get juiced as the track I haven't heard since 23 December 2007 and it is indeed by far the worst track of the album.
Many people are not really fond of this album but I actually think it is really good not in the least because it sounds very bluesy and soulful on tracks like Anybody Seen My Baby? and Already Over Me. But the best song is one of those great album openers they seem to have the patent on: Flick The Switch. The album goes up from the 61st to the 37th rank of the year.

Angels And Daemons At Play by Motorpsycho
One of these great MP albums where they both sound proggy and heavy. There is again a very long song to be found here Un Chien D'Espace) which sounds great and is supposed to be stretched even longer on live concerts: I would love to see them live once.
And the album enters at the 44th rank.

Electro-Shock Blues by Eels
And that track is Climbing To The Moon which I haven't heard since 11 September 2007 which is not the worst song of the album.
I'm sorry: I'm only a lukewarm lover of Eels and this album might be the best example of this. It is indeed incredibly sad but I miss some good songs so this album only moves up from one of the last ranks to number 48 of my year chart.

Smitten by Buffalo Tom
A bit the forgotten album by this band I really like. It might not contain an unforgettable track but overall it is very good so it immediately goes to the 23rd rank of the year.
