Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 17% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.1/100, a mean average of 73.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.1.

Says a lot about the excellence of "Psychocandy" & "Darklands" that I found an album this good a disappointment ??

This album is definitely my favorite from the group and that’s high praise since I consider Psycho Candy a classic. This is a great album throughout especially Blues From A Gun, Head On & Take It.

An impressive third record from JAMC that feels revitalised and is filled to the brim with really good, crowd-pleasing pop-rock tracks. The disdain is really quite unfair because although it can't live upto the exceptionally high bar set by "Psychocandy" & "Darklands", this one holds its own.

Some really good songs but it's all let down by the horrible 80's drum machine for me. The Pixies version of Head On shows how good this album could've been.

Less feedback and perfectly suited to that late 80's sound of Stone Roses and the like, than Pyschocandy. Still got that edgy sound, especially the last 4 tracks (I have the 10 track vinyl version). First six songs are crackers with Blues From A Gun my favourite track of theirs.

Panned by critics in the late 80's, had it been released to 20 years later it would had been hailed as the masterpiece of its generation. Although it doesn't have the dark atmospheric textures of Psychocandy or Darklands it is a more accesible and guitar driven album which never looses energy and focus and that seems like a textbook when you listen to so many bands today, An underrated masterpiece that has and will keep standing the test of time...
