My discoveries per year

Well! Here I would like to start with my own long term project taking advantage of the best BEA has to offer: overall charts from people who are as interested in music as I am. I already have year charts which are based on the albums I already own or know, but there are a lot of them which I haven't listened to yet and which might be worth discovering. I'd like to do this by going through the overall BEA top lists per year starting in 1963 which is both my year of birth and the year in which I personally think rock music started to become interesting. To keep it a bit varied I will skip through the years in five year periods, ie starting in 1963 then 1968 then 1973 all the way to 2013 and then back to 1964 and so on. Every year I will start with some stats of my personal chart in comparison to the overall year charts, both top 20 an top 50 and will start to listen to at least the top 20 albums I don't know and I'll hope to give some comments sometimes very short, sometimes a bit longer. I will also update my personal year charts accordingly. In principle I will use Apple Music to listen to the albums, which I suppose will cover most of the field. If a certain album isn't present in Apple Music, I'll have to skip it. I will try to listen to all the albums at least once and sometimes twice if I doubt, but I'll skip the really stupid ones (ex a Xmas compilation in 1963) and also other compilations, classical music, jazz and easy listening. This will be a long term project which means there might be times in which I will stop a bit of course because I don't want be stuck listining to albums of the same year all the time. However I suppose this will take at least a month per year. I will try to keep it up but please don't be mad if I give up (maybe already after the first year :lol: )

Crazy Rhythms by The Feelies
For one reason or another this first album of this band does not gel in the same way as their other albums. Each song has something good but half of each of those songs are not that good. The tracks are jangly and very indie and their not bad but in my opinion they would do much better later. This album goes from the 65th to the 53rd rank of the year.

Nobody's Heroes by Stiff Little Fingers
The second album from this Irish punk band and it's even better than their first one: short pointy and angry tracks where only the dubby Bloody Dub and The Specials cover Doesn't Make It Alright are a bit less in quality. But immediately enters at the 25th rank of the year.

Heaven Up Here by Echo & The Bunnymen
This is the second album of this great UK band and this one is maybe not so full of hits as their first but there are enough good tracks to keep you happy like A Promise or All My Colours. So good enough to go from the 27th to the 22nd rank.

Hard 'N' Heavy by Anvil (CA)
This is the first album by this Canadian band and as they were only going to start with speedmetal at their second this one is still filled with classic seventies hardrock in the style of bands like UFO. The lyrics are a bit dumb and the production is not so good but the guitar solos are great and the drums as well so this is the first very good album of the band which immediately goes to the 19th rank.

So Far by Bob Theil
Only available via Youtube and I'm still puzzled why I like this album but I do very much. It's very folky and normally not my style but there's something here that touches me and especially the title track is great. So the album goes from the 34th to the 30th rank of 1982.

Mesopotamia by The B-52's
After their fantastic albums, the self-titled one and Wild Planet, this was meant to be their third full album in collaboration with David Byrne; what should have been a fantastic collaboration turned into conflicts and the album was abandoned and the finished tracks were released as an EP which in my opinion... is a total failure: Everything seems to be there except for good songs and I don't like it all, so not for my year chart.

Murmur by R.E.M.
The first album and already one of their best with the first two tracks, Radio Free Europe and Pilgrimage as the highlights. But the album is one big highlight and a classic and stays firmly at the second rank of my year chart.

Built To Destroy by Michael Schenker Group
Pretty dated eighties hardrock especially because of the synths which are not help to lift the quality of the album and most of the songs are fairly generic as well except for maybe a few ones like Rock My Nights Away. But there's that incredible guitar playing by Michael Schenker, sometimes through a few solos and sometime because they totally make the tracks like on the instrumental Captain Nemo or Red Sky which takes his takes his guitar work to another level. So I like this album nevertheless and it immediately enters at the 24th rank.

Purple Rain by Prince And The Revolution
Although this is a great album with great tracks like the title track, When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, etc, it just contains a bit too many not so good ones The Beautiful Ones, Darling Nikki, to be a classic. So a good album which climbs from the 49th to the 36th rank.

Lament by Ultravox
This album contains to good tracks: Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and One Small Day. But the rest of the album is so average I can't include it in my year chart.

Btw: yesterday I went to see an American band which is said to be only loved in three places starting with a B: Boston, Buffalo and Belgium: The Sheila Divine. They had some major hits in Belgium with their first album and the three concerts they are playing in Belgium celebrate the 25th birthday of New Parade. And a good concert it was: Aaron Perrino's voice is still roaring as ever although he had a bit of a cold and the songs of the first album together with some of their newer work (of which the new single Kim Deal Or No Deal) and some tracks from Perrino's other band Dear Leader.

Dinosaur by Dinosaur
This is the first album from one of my favorite bands and this means that the band was still searching for their own sound which they would quickly find at the next albums which were classics but this album is not yet one as proven by some subpar tracks like Cats In A Bowl or Pointless. But there were some really good starts of what they would become like on Repulsion or Severed Lips. So already a good but not very good album which moves up from the 40th to the 26th rank.

Hallelujah All The Way Home by The Verlaines
The first album of this very good Kiwi band and key artists of the Flying Nun label. Their first album and this means that they were still searching for their own sound (a bit like Dinosaur) and it's clear that they weren't completely succesful in finding it yet. Of course there are many good songs but somehow they were just good and nothing more. This counted together with a few misses like Don't Send Me Away means that this is an album for my year chart but certainly not at the highest ranks, ie the 37th rank.

The Colour Of Spring by Talk Talk
Clearly an inbetween album between their synth hit period and their more experimental second period with two classic albums. In fact on this album are their biggest hits: Life's What You Make It and Living In Another World, but more based on real instruments (guitar, piano, horns) than on synths. And that even is more true for songs that announce their new path like Chameleon Day. So the best was yet to come but this was already a good album which goes from the 30th to the 31st rank.

True Stories by Talking Heads
An album I already know but somehow didn't make it to my year chart yet and it's clear that this is not the best Talking Heads album. Love For Sale and Wild Wild Life are good but clearly not in the league of their best albums and that's even more true for the rest. So an OK album but only enters my year chart at the 40th rank.

Floodland by The Sisters Of Mercy
Not their best album although This Corrosion is one of their best tracks. Dominion/ Mother Russia and Flood I/II form somewhat of a suite and are also must-haves but not in the league of The Temple Of Love or Alice. But still a must-have album which goes from the 40th to the 24th rank of my year chart.

Bird Dog by The Verlaines
I know better bands and albums from the Flying Nun scene so for me a good but not great album which lands at the 52nd rank of my 1987 year chart.

Viva Hate by Morrissey
This is the first album after The Smiths but only Everyday Is Like Sunday and Suedehead reach that level. The rest is still good though and the album goes from the 19th to the 23rd rank.

Ain't Complaining by Status Quo
Status Quo is my hidden pleasure but their eighties albums suck and so does this one. The title track and Everything I Think Of You are fairly OK but the rest just isn't so not for my year chart this one.

Love Agenda by Band Of Susans
It's about time to upgrade this album considerably. That other album of theirs, The Word And The Flesh is already a long time an absolute favorite of mine because the songs go perfectly together with the, fairly clean, 3 guitar attack. This predecessing album is much rougher, maybe because one of the band members not on the following album would become a member of Helmet, but still very much guitar based and also absolutely perfect with Hard Light as the highlight. I enjoyed relistening this album so much it just had to move up from the 17th to the 9th rank.

Snowball by The Field Mice
By all measures not an excellent album and by all measures not a bad album. One track is maybe a bit better than the others: White. So overall an average album but good enough to be in my year chart at the 32nd rank.
