I don't know anything about the genre, so I'll be using this thread as well, but nezzle would say this, and I agree it's very good, so here it is :

Math rock is basically post - hardcore with odd rhythmic experimentation (basically experimental post - hardcore). However, there are probably more complex ways to describe it, but that's the easiest way to explain it to people. Here's a group of math rock albums which I love (Polvo is good too btw):
Drive Like Jehu's Yank Crime
Shellac's 1000 hurts
Don Caballero's Don Caballero 2
Shiner's Lula Divinia
65daysofstatic's One Time for All Time
Minus the Bear's Highly Refined Pirates
Bitch Magnet's Umber
Toe's For Long Tomorrow
BATS' Red In Tooth & Claw
Ruins' Tzomborgha
Hella's Hold Your Horse Is
EDIT: I have a few more I should have added earlier.
Tera Melos' self titled
Oxes' Oxxxes
31Knots' It Was High Time to Escape
Sweep the Leg Johnny's Going Down Swingin'
S.Pam's self titled
Trephine's self titled
You Slut!'s critical meat

I don't know exactly what post hardcore is. I think the best way to describe it is to say it's a genre based on rhythmic experimentation, as you said, and mostly instrumental. Seems a bit generic like this, though. I think the best way to get it is to listen to something.
Oh, and I'm listening to this

Only listened to the first two songs. The second one is really something awesome, love those riffs in the background with that "lazy" voice on them. And then it changes in something even better.
