After 50 (!) votes in the most recent poll, we finally have 4 final round spots filled. 1967, 1969, 1971, and 1977.

2001 has more than a few fantastic releases, but 1991 wins it for me. A few of my favourites:

The Cult - Ceremony (UNDERRATED)
Death - Human
Metallica - The Black Album
Motorhead - 1916
Nirvana - Nevermind
Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
Pearl Jam - Ten
Pixies - Trompe Le Monde
Porcupine Tree - On The Sunday Of Life...
Primus - Sailing The Seas Of Cheese
R.E.M. - Out Of Time
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Rush - Roll The Bones (UNDERRATED)
The Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Temple Of The Dog - Temple Of The Dog
U2 - Achtung Baby

One of the strongest years generally, the year alternative music and grunge broke and so many great bands released diverse albums.

A great list of records right there. I'd add A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory and the Guns N Roses Use Your Illusion albums simply because there are a few songs on each of them (Coma, Estranged, etc.) that I'm constantly blown away by. I would also put an (UNDERRATED) next to Primus's Sailing the Seas of Cheese. I think that's a great record to listen to and to figure out how to play. I think it's rated as 75/100 on this site. To me that's very underrated.

Agreed with both. Now you've reminded of another underrated album, Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black by Public Enemy. It's their third best imo. Such a great year

What hard choices!

For me it came down to a showdown between 1991 and 1994.
Year of grunge vs year of Britpop.

I prefer Britpop to grunge generally but in the end I came down on the side of 1991.

Some of my favourite '91 albums:

Julian Cope - Peggy Suicide
KLF - White Room
REM - Out of Time
Orb - Orb's Adventures Beyond The Underworld
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - God Fodder
Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
NWA - Efil4Zaggin
Kirsty MacColl - Electric Landlady
Crowded House - Woodface
PM Dawn - That Cross album with Set Adrift.. on it
James - James
Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
Pearl Jam - Ten
Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Bryan Adams - Waking Up The Neighbours
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magick
Nirvana - Nevermind
Orbital - Orbital
Simply Red - Stars
Prince and NPG - Diamonds and Pearls
Neil Young - Weld
Queen - Innuendo/Greatest Hits 2
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Enya - Shepherd Moons
2Pac - 2Pacalypse Now
U2 - Achtung Baby
Michael Jackson - Dangerous
Runrig - The Big Wheel
Inspiral Carpets - The Beast Inside
The Commitments Soundtrack
Saint Etienne - Foxbase Alpha
John Lee Hooker - Mr Lucky
Joan Osborne - Live album

1994 had a tonne of good albums too but I feel 1991 had more. And more of quality.

Great job giving props to the badly underrated Ceremony!

'97 and '01 are part of the bottom of the tub in my catalog. Neither has a chance on my list.

Nice recovery by '06 and '07 with even better results in '10 and off another cliff in '16.

'94 was the last truly great year for a long time, but in the end, I stick with '91.

Here's a few highlights not generally mentioned:

Parallels - the best album by progressive metal masters Fates Warning
The badly overlooked Roll the Bones by Rush.
Buddy Guy's scorching Damn Right I Got the Blues
Soundgarden's BEST--Badmotorfinger!
The inexplicably obscure but totally captivating Turbulence by Yes' axe slinger Steve Howe
5 time Guitarist of the Year Steve Morse's Southern Steel
The haunting and beautiful The Visit by Canadian Celtic/World Music Queen Loreena McKinnett
Underrated bluesman Son Seals' best album, Living in the Danger Zone
Brilliant New Age/Jazz crossover Acoustic Alchemy's best album, Back on the Case
Jazz Banjoist Bela Fleck's totally awesome Flight of the Cosmic Hippo
Danny Gatton's way too much fun 88 Elmira Street
Another wicked good blues outing in Albert Collins' Ice Man.

Yep, definitely 1991, in spite of all that horribly overrated grunge (Badmotorfinger excepted, of course).
