I found that comparing the associated Allmusic reviews helped explain why I went the way I did.
For the Carlile:
...finding the singer/songwriter shifting away from the ramshackle mess of 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter and toward the kind of grandiose emotional bloodletting...
vs. for the Chats:
...the Chats continue to make good on their snarky, comedic, old-school punk-promise with their debut full-length album, 2020's High Risk Behaviour.
There's no denying the power and beauty of the Carlile, but it's rare that I really get into "grandiose emotional bloodletting." At least The Chats were fun, so that just worked better for me.
