I know! I would've started an argument by now, but I'm just amused by the whole thing.

I thought the whole point of this site was that individuals registered, listed their personal favourite albums, and then these lists were aggregated to create a composite list that better reflected the public consensus.. as opposed to the choices of 'professional critics' or magazines with vested interests.

I don't see 'clube de esquina', 'for whom the beat tolls' or 'snowflakes are dancing' on any 'best albums of all time' lists, but as far as i'm concerned they are of such calibre, so i don't have any backpocket bands bubbling under the surface of my list..

But what are some bands that you think are consistently good, but never made anything truly great? For me, Camera Obscura's 4 albums all fall into the 7-8.5/10 range but they have yet to make what I would consider to be one of the greatest albums of all-time.

well, sergio mendes springs to mind.. a lot of his albums contain a few great tracks and a lot of fillers and often a dodgy beatles cover.. which would incline me towards including his greatest hits.. however, his greatest hits is also cluttered with filler and beatles covers which is a real head scratcher.. i think brasileiro is the best album overall, i'll have to listen again

what he did with 'mas que nada' as well as the stunning 'magdalenha' is however, true greatness in my opinion

and then there's the kinks.. again, their albums are a bit hit and miss for me.. and the greatest hits collections are a bit bloated, although they do contain the classics..

again, 'waterloo sunset' is one of the greatest songs ever, 'you really got me', 'shangria', 'all day and all of the night' etc are also 5 star brilliance.. if i could find an album that was more congruent with their greatness it would definitely warrant inclusion

i did see ray davis perform a couple of years ago.. and despite me being notoriously impatient when it comes to live music.. i was transfixed the entire time as he played the classics.. i didn't really think he was a genius as such before then, but after i was pretty stumped for an argument against it

I've been curious about Camera Obscura for a while, but everything I've read about them, compared them to Belle and Sebastian, whom I love. The comparison is a good thing, but are they one of those bands who sounds so much like their predecessor that you might as well listen to B&S? Or do they have their own unique thing going? This question kind of belongs in the songs that sound like other songs thread.

Naples took Shankly at his literal word. He then tried to clarify his meaning. No offence guys but in the context of the original text he was right. Stop giving yourselves wedgies over nothing.

Yeah, I don't think I've read an article/review about them that doesn't mention B&S. I started with Let's Get Out of This Country, which doesn't sound like B&S as much as their first two albums, so I'd recommend starting there-- and it's their best album, I think. Their music is so similar that you'd swear there were one songwriter writing both of their albums, but the vocalists are completely different, which distinguishes the two and never makes me feel like I might as well listen to the one I prefer.
