Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

One of the greatest guitarists I've ever heard. The man is a magician on the acoustic guitar.

The timing of this couldn't be better. This album is my favorite find of this year so far, and I was wondering where to go from here. I feel like a little kid in a candy store here. Razz

Simply one of the best folk records I've ever heard. Risking a Mercuryism, I'd say I prefer it to any of Dylan's folk records due to the quality of his singing and the somber, reflective tone of the album. This album goes down really well with a side of whiskey. Smile

"Or a beer!", I answered, opening a Carlsberg.

But yeah, splendid folk album - alas, although, as you may have seen, I quite like a number of other Jansch LPs, he'll never find the grace that seems to miraculously bestow him on this record. Taking Davey Graham templates and pushing them further down the road of melancholy, Jansch leads us straight into Drake territory.

But if you like Led Zeppelin better than Nick Drake, by all means listen to this all the same! You'll find Jansch and Page have quite a lot in common...

Probably a top 5 folk album for me. The guitar work is great, but it's only a small part of a bigger whole that feels like somewhere I could have grown up.

This is excellent! Only heard it twice an it's been awhile. Need to revisit and I shall. I was introduced to this through this Chart, one of the main reasons I nominated it a couple months back.

And to RepoMan, I'm not sure what would qualify as a "mercuryism". Maybe a random "yay" or "sweet" with exclamation points? Maybe a cretin dig? Maybe a mudslinging bash due to challenging the superiority of Dylan? Idfk what public perception is.

As for this album in comparison to Dylan's early albums: I'd say the production and general ambience or feel of it is pretty close to equally personal and immediate. His guitar technique is superior to Dylan's (although I feel Dylan is an underrated guitarist). As for songwriting, well my first thought is it can't possibly be considered equal lyrically to "Another Side" or "The Times They Are A Changin" or even "Freewheelin'", but then again I haven't taken a commensurate amount of time poring over Jansch's lyrics. So I am not certain.

Great album...

Worth checking out the stuff he did with Pentangle a couple of years later too if you like this, especially...

I adore The Pentangle but this hasn't quite clicked for me yet, I'll be giving it more tries though.
