- Post subject: Far Out, Man! Suggestions for Psychedelic albums?
|
Over the past several years, I have really gotten into the psychedelic (rock/folk/sunshine pop/garage rock/progressive) stuff from the sixties and early seventies.
I have collected, listened to, and fell in love with a lot of albums that fit into this very loose and open niche. Here's an small example of the type of stuff I'm referring to:
Love - Forever Changes
Beatles - Revolver
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request
Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes
Kevin Ayers - Joy of a Toy
West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - A Child's Guide to Good and Evil
Iron Butterfly - Heavy
The Misunderstood - After the Dream Faded
Beach Boys - Wild Honey
Silver Apples - Silver Apples
Gandalf - Gandalf
The Seeds - The Seeds
David Axelrod - Song of Innocence
The Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow
Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed
Country Joe & The Fish - Electric Music for the Mind and Body
Donovan - Sunshine Superman
Moby Grape - Wow
Gong - Angel's Egg
The Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle
The Nuggets, Pebbles, and Piccadilly Sunshine series are great compilations, too! (I know compilations aren't loved as much on this site...but, I've found series like these wonderful!)
Now I come to you, the good folks that make up the community of Best Ever Albums for some help. I'd love to know some of your suggestions. So, if you are truly into the type of music that I listed, please make some suggestions for further listening. I'm especially looking for those obscure or overlooked albums. Various artist compilation albums are very much welcomed!
I am also very open to suggestions of more recently released stuff that continue in the same flavor as those classics.
Oh...and please comment on any albums you'd suggest. (This is when I miss hanging out in record stores. For you younger folks, please go watch "High Fidelity," "Empire Records," or "Pretty in Pink" to understand further about these long-forgotten sanctuaries for music lovers. Think "music chat room with actual people.")
So...the suggestion box is now open... _________________ Speakers of the House DJ

It's definitely nothing like any of those records, but the record that always pops into my head when I think of psychedelia is Harald Grosskopf's Synthesist, although that probably says as much about my own lifestyle choices as it does about the music.

Synthesist by Harald Grosskopf
Some stuff what I done gone and writed about it in one or other of these threads recently:
Skinny wrote: | Synthesist is one of my favourite albums ever made, its lilting arpeggios and strangely calming drones just take me to another world. I love the way the album varies wildly in tone and tempo from beginning to end, but manages to maintain a certain oneness through its clever use of repeated motifs. Whilst I was living in London it was my go-to tripping balls album, and me and a various assortment of friends old and new spent many a night staring at ceilings and getting lost in our own thoughts to the sounds of Grosskopf. The epic title track acts as the perfect centrepiece, a track that pulls together all of the album's ideas and threads into one of the single greatest pieces of music I've ever heard, and it's almost as though everything before it is a preparation for that track whilst everything succeeding it is a warm-down, leaving the listener to float gently back to the real world following their slow ascension. So yeah, I probably did a few too many psychedelics to this record, but whatever. This shit is the mad note. |
Also, I'd highly recommend:

Clouds Taste Metallic by The Flaming Lips
... which is sort of like The Beach Boys if they hadn't stayed so fucking true to their school. Except nothing like that. It's just great psych-pop, all these spindly guitar lines and insanely catchy melodies swirling around beneath Neil Young croaking away whilst hopped up on happy pills. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

Begin by The Millennium
A recent discovery of mine, very great sunshine pop with slight psychedelic overtones. Kinda like Odessey And Oracle, thought possibly less joyful. Incredible songwriting on display here, I think it should fit your tastes.
