'85:6 Punk, Meet Metal. Metal, Meet Punk

To Mega Therion by Celtic Frost

This is it. The point halfway between metal and hardcore punk. Straddling the two spheres like a giant colossus. It's dark, sludgy and fast. But there's a buzzsaw rhythm afoot as well. Slithering through the songs with its forked tongue out. One of the crucial albums of the metal underground and a must listen for all extreme metal & harcore fans.

First Impression: A
RIYL: Motorhead, Slayer, Discharge, Black Flag, Venom

'85:7 Set To Melt

Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963 by Sam Cooke

This album melts me. Whatever mood I'm in , I can count on this album changing it. For the better. Sam Cooke explodes on this album with enough charm & charisma to turn enemies into friends. And friends into lovers. If it's energy and spirit could be distilled and concentrated and then loaded into a gazillion crop dusters spreading out across the globe, world peace would no longer be a dream.

First Impression: I like parties so it gets an... A.
RIYL: A rawer & relaxed Sam Cooke oozing charm with just a touch of James Brown showmanship.

'85:8 Swallowed Up Alive in the Desert of Time

Spleen And Ideal by Dead Can Dance

Considering how much I love atmospheric & dark records from the 80s, it's really weird that I've never listened to this before. It'd be kickass soundtrack music, and I'm sure they must have gone on to do film scores. This album is about as cinematic as u can get. A perfect album for a late night listen with all the lights turned down and the volume turned up.

First Impression: A
RIYL: Mid 80s Goth & Darkwave. Dark ambient sweeping & engulfing soundtracks.

I did it! I got through a week of this project.*** Massive back pat to myself & a silently mouthed "Way to go, Buddy!" to me.

Ok. so at the end of each week, I'm gonna rank the 8 albums I listened to as best I can considering their varied genres. here goes...

8 Albums A Week: Episode 1 (1985)

Essential
Celtic Frost _ To Mega Therion (Extreme Metal)
Sam Cooke - Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963 (Soul)

Highly Recommended
Dead Can Dance - Spleen & Ideal (Goth)
John Eliot Gardiner - Bach's Mass In B Minor (Classical)
Green On Red - Gas Food & Lodging (Alt Country)

Recommended
Youth Of Today - Can't Close My Eyes (Hardcore Punk)
Brian Eno - Thursday Afternoon (Ambient)
William Onyeabor - Anything You Sow (Synth Pop)

So.... Next I'm going to hit up 2018 because I feel like an old fart. This time I'm going to post the 8 albums right up front before I even listen to them so I have absolutely no wiggle room, because in truth I listened to about 11 -12 albums from 1985!!! Shocked Surprised Brick wall

Hey, at least I'm honest. lol.

Of course you're not me Wink but my favorites of this year and this top 8 are Car Seat Headrest and Kamasi.
But to be honest this top 8 is for me not the quintessence of this fantastic musical year. For that you have to look a bit lower than the top 8.
I already liked your view on those 8 albums of 1985 (I'm listening to eighties music anyway now) and I certainly will try to listen to some of the ones you liked here.

These are just the 8 albums I picked to listen to this week. I really have no opinion on them just yet.

'18:1 Spring Break

Daytona by Pusha T

Like Spring Break, this album is fun, accessible quickie. Mainstream rap that goes down easy and is extremely likeable. It's a sugar rush the first couple of spins especially, but than u start realizing that some of the beats are lifted from other hip hop albums and the spells wears off ever so slightly. This is not the girl you're going to marry, but hell for a week in the sun, it sure doesn't get much more fun.

First Glance: A
Second Take: B
