Rime of the Ancient Mariner is probably their best song, and that's saying a lot. It's also got Bruce's best vocal shenanigans.
Then the spell starts to break
The albatross falls from his neck
Sinks down like lead into the sea
Then down in falls comes the RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN _________________ Finally updated the overall chart

I sorta feel like Maiden peaked with their debut, on most of their albums since then they were trying to replicate that sound (though maybe a little more refined) but never really quite got there and declined on each subsequent album.
That said, Powerslave is definitely the outlier. While I still prefer the debut, Powerslave hit back HARD, easily my second-favorite of their albums.
And can't say I disagree about "Rime..." being either their best, their most pretentious, or their proggiest haha. Just the other day we were talking about Metallica's unsuccessful forays into prog, but I think Maiden did it successfully. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

Heard most of this album through the Friday Rock Show and the much-missed Tommy Vance. Great programme back in its day. Literally had 100's C90 tapes of this show.
Used to struggle to stay awake and edit out talking. Used the Amstraaaaaad double tape deck. Brilliant quality.
Powerslave was the peak in my opinion for Maiden but i can listen to all of 'em [especially the first three] and enjoy. Great band

First two and last two songs are killers. The middle is a bit meh. One of their best for sure, and I feel like the title track isn't getting enough credit. It's fantastic. _________________ All time

Yup those songs are mostly my favourites from them. Hallowed Be Thy Name, Clansman, Seventh Son, even Empire of the Clouds. Not all of my favourite Maiden songs are long and proggy, but a good deal are. Also I don't find them pretentious at all tbh, there's much worse offenders in that regard than Maiden. _________________ Finally updated the overall chart
