Personally, I always viewed Nirvana, and this album, as extremely overrated. But with that said, it's still a good album. Incredibly raw in sound. It was one of a bunch of albums released in the late 80s and early 90s, following the popularity of new wave, that coincided completely with a continuation of that raw 60s and 70s guitar oriented classic rock sound.

Smells like needlessly overwrought teen angst.

That's kind of the point. Taking the punk energy and doing something different with it, all the while speaking to the whole generation of angsty teens (unintentionally).

I just realized that I've had this CD for almost 30 years, and never once bothered to rip it to MP3 files.

Sure, it's not the only CD on the shelves here that I never got around to ripping, but the others are more like what you'd expect — that time my father-in-law bought me a comp of 60s psychedelic bands from what's now the Slovak Republic, for example.

And it's not like I don't like Nevermind — I do — but I guess it just never occurred to me to listen to it again, once the Pacific NW grunge scene started to dissipate and I was busy trying to get my hands on everything Slowdive, Lush, Blur, and Catherine Wheel ever recorded. Maybe we all had some growing up to do back then, but I'm pretty sure I was well over 30 at that point...

Anyway, I just ripped it for the first time and hey, it's still readable! And apparently they even released a 5.1 surround version a few years back... you can still get it on Blu-Ray at Amazon for only $205.00. Kewl! Very Happy

Has nothing to do with teenage angst, but it was a cool buzzword people could oversimplify it too without really understanding it.

one of the most awesome albums of my teenage years
I was 16 when this dropped
it spoke to me greatly
but you don't have to be a teenager to appreciate Kurt and the Boys
all-time classic in my book
groundbreaking
