Absolutely brilliant metal album, top 10 metal albums of all time. Probably my favourite Metallica album.
'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)' is the best thing they've done in my opinion and 'Master Of Puppets' used to be my alarm track... _________________

I couldn't find any love in the last five tracks, but the first three were some of the best heavy metal I've ever heard.

I love it. I'm not really into metal, but this is fantastic. More or less on par with Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss for my favorite metal album.

I guess I should say something about this album. It's no secret that Metallica is one of my favorite bands.
Once upon a time, I was not particularly interested in music. People used to ask me what I listened to and I would reply with "anything," but the truth is that I listened to nothing. Then I listened to this album. Changed my life. I couldn't believe music could sound like that. The tight chugging rhythms of James Hetfield and the beautifully melodic solos of Kirk Hammett seemed unreal to me.
Every track on the album is intense and heavy, yet Metallica isn't afraid to slow it down and remind people that they are writing songs. The interlude on the title track says it all in terms of Metallica's sense of melody. Metallica showed everyone how to play thrash with their debut, Kill 'Em All, then they slowed it down a bit and wrote more complete songs on Ride the Lightning. With Master of Puppets they cemented themselves as one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time.
This album also marked the end of an era for Metallica. It was the last album to feature Cliff Burton who died on the supporting tour for it in a bus accident. They would go on to basically remove the bass from their followup album, ...And Justice For All, and then on their self titled fifth album they went for a totally different style of metal.
I needed to make a separate little paragraph to say that Leper Messiah is hands down the most underrated Metallica song. That is all. _________________

Man, I chose a damn good string of AotDs to be absent for. Time to catch up!
Anyway, this album is a metal masterpiece. There is simply no getting around this fact. Metallica demonstrated their mad chops (both in playing and in songwriting) on Ride the Lightning, but this album takes all of those brilliant ideas presented on its predecessor and takes them one step further (it's no secret that this album can be compared almost track-by-track to RtL, both in structure and in quality). There is not a single weak track out of 8 on here, and the highlights (particularly the opener, the title track, "Leper Messiah", and "Orion") are among the dopest, most progressive (and, at times, grooviest) metal tracks of the '80s.
Tragically, I grew up assuming that Metallica sucked total balls, mainly because I was exposed to their post-Black Album stuff first, but this was the album that made me realize how horribly wrong I was. Amazing.
