Seven years ago album number two from Melbourne group The Paper Kites sat comfortably within my 2015 best albums list and recently revisiting it I was reminded of what a gorgeous piece of work it is. I was also reminded how Fleet-Foxish it sounded only to discover that not only was it recorded in Seattle but was also produced by none other than Phil Ek who has / had worked with Fleet Foxes. No surprise there. I also discovered ‘Twelvefour’ is a concept album (of sorts) with all tracks written by singer songwriter Sam Bentley between the hours of midnight and 4AM. Clearly this is a breakup album with devastatingly sad lyrics underpinning the beautifully lush instrumentation

One of my favorite albums from the past decade. The Paper Kites have created a classic record here, each track standing on its own merits and the album flows like a charm. The style is greatly influenced from 80s Pop, and with that the songs drive and have a nice hook to them, but the lyricism and harmonics of the composition keep the music enriching and captivating.
