Last year, Strut Records introduced many to maloya, the formerly banned folk music style of Réunion that echoes the traditions of Malagasy slaves. This year, Uganda-based label Nyege Nyege Tapes released a collection of tracks by Jako Maron in which he reinvented maloya rhythms and sounds electronically. It’s a mesmerising combination, not explicitly set for the dancefloor but certainly energetic enough, and carries the same metallic bite as Mim Suleiman’s Umbeya.
