It doesn't seem like too many others are, but I'm thoroughly impressed w this album. Love the mixture of distortion and synth, and there's a good amount of variety with the production and melodies. A really mature release from a band who I had only expected bouncy, carefree pop from. (Edited)
yeah i'm surprised this hasn't done better on this site . 88th is pretty low, it's in my top 10 anyway. i love that the bouncy, childlike artifice has been corroded away leaving great pop tunes, albeit with a bitter layer on top (Edited)

This is a fantastic album, Kero Kero Bonito got past their j-pop novelty and decided to produce some of the best nostalgic sounding synth pop songs of the year, with a dash of rock. The subject matter is more serious and relatable this time around, but it still manages to maintain the lightheartedness, fun and joy of their previous works.Definitely a must this year, dont sleep on this band please. I still can't quite understand why KKB's stuff makes me so nostalgic...
There's nothing wrong with Kero Kero Bonito's sound and style. I can enjoy some fluffy twee-bop now and then. The problem is that the songs on this album are almost uniformly mediocre. Most of them sound like tossed-off throwaways with perfunctory melodies that immediately fade from memory once they're over.
KKB might have a great album in them eventually, but they're gonna have to step up their songwriting game considerably to get there. Until then, their undeserved hype seems to be due to little more than the Caucasian hipster's ever-growing obsession with all things Japanese.
