Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. One of the most interesting albums of 2018. This band took the sound of famous bands like Kraftwerk or Cabaret Voltaire with post-punk influences mixed with dark textures and, a minimalist modern sound, all singed in its own lenguage. The world needs more bands like these witch let you enjoy them from first listen. My favorite electronic band of these last years.
Not all the best albums must be complex and slow!

Russian post communist post punk dark wave synthpop from 2018? Now this is cool! Thanks YouTube. Sounds like it is actually from the 80s and not just sounds like it's from the 80s.
