Texas singer-songwriter Hayes Carll took a step back in 2016 to put out the uncharacteristically moody break up album "Lovers and Leavers." Mr. Carll has appeared to have found love again and went back to the studio to make another raucous-y country folk gem that he calls "What It Is."
I'm digging the production on this one. He really spices up a few tracks here, which are familiarly folky for fans but offer something new and interesting for new listeners.
In a nutshell, the songwriting gets to the heart and his vocal delivery is enthusiastic. He remains a leading Texas singer-songwriter amongst his contemporaries.
Track Pick: Jesus and Elvis
A rolling country record. Was going to criticise it but then "Wild Pointy Finger" came on and I had a different thought!
