Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 25% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.4/100, a mean average of 73.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.7.

Very different from his prior work. Given the interviews I have heard from him where he talks about how much he is a rocker and doesn't like being pigeon holed as a country artist, I am not surprised by the direction this album took. Still, I miss the Sturgill of Metamodern.

Heard this album playing in my record shop.
Bought a vinyl copy and therefore my first introduction to Sturgill Simpson on my Hi-fi.
Fine album.
Will now explore his other materials

Sturgill Simpson showed excellent songwriting skills on Metamodern Sounds and Sailor's Guide to Earth. Unfortunately, this follow-up is lost in heavy production.

Sound & Fury is obviously a huge shift for Sturgill Simpson. Its sort of a throwback record to 80s rock, but there are some other elements in there too. Good album to play loud. I just found there are only 3-4 songs on the album that are memorable at all. Its a change that doesn't bother me, but I hope it isn't one that sticks either.
